Post by: new2jeepguy on January 16, 2012, 11:53:45 PM
my 97 cherokee  4l   if I try to accelerate and put my foot in it,  it misses and sputters, cuts in/out  .   exhaust pipe is black and sooty like an olkd engine would be with the choke stuck  like its running real rich          any ideas?

Could be a sensor could be plugs and wires etc... plugged cat or missing cat or wires to exhaust sensors.  Maybe all of the above maybe none

My 99 did the same thing. Its your upstream oxygen sensor. Swap in a new one and reset your computer and I bet it is good to go.

Chrysler relies heavily on O2 sensor readings for fueling, any hint of black in tail pipe means it time to replace it. If you've already replacedit you have other problems, but if you haven't yet, likely it'll fix it right up.
