Title: 2007/8 GC Diesel
Post by: Sprockett on February 24, 2012, 09:56:07 AM
Does anyone have experiences, good or bad, servicing one of these in Calgary? For engine/trans related issues now off warranty, would one bring it to Chrysler or MB dealer to service?

Thanks,
Ryan

We work on them at Chanda. One of our customers has almost 500,000 kms on his drives a lot. Still no major problems on his but he can't stop hitting deer with it lol
If your looking for service or repair give us a call 403-287-3350.

Hi Jay, thanks for the reply.

Don't have one yet but considering. You have gotten familiar with these engines? Any recurring issues he's had in those miles? Never can tell online but I've been hearing tonnes of finicky service stories right down to the engine oil used, etc.

The WKs are great rigs but there are a couple of weak spots on them. The 4wd systems are prone to error messages and require dealer only reprogramming. Mine has done this twice but fortunately were both covered under warranty. The bearings in the 8.25 rear and 8.0 fronts are also a weak point. I believe the one that Jay is talking about has had the rear diff rebuilt. My rear has been rebuilt, not under warranty due to my lift kit. The front is starting to get noisy and the bushings where the diff connects to the subframe are clunking and this also appears to be a common issue. The only other cosmetic issue are the "leather" seats. They are mostly vinyl and are prone to cracking, and mine have also done this.

That all being said, the major components like engine, transmission and T-case are bullet proof. The 3.0 Mercedes diesel is a gem on fuel and is silky smooth. My 08 4.7 has the same transmission as the diesel and it too is a Mercedes transmission.

If you can check out these trouble spots before you buy and try to get the Quadra Drive II with the front and rear electronic LSD front and rear it works flawless. If you can find a limited or Overland they are worth the few extra bucks.

PS Chrysler recommends Mobil 1 but any synthetic oil will do just fine. If I had my day over I would have paid the extra 7 to 8 grand for the diesel and Quadra Drive. I hope this helps and Jay and the boys at Chanda are honest and trustworthy so if you are doubtful of a rig, I'm sure they can do a pre purchase inspection for you.

Good info in here! I'm actually considering selling my JK and picking up one of these diesels since the wife is with child now, so I'm going to get a calmer DD and build up an old CJ or something for a trail rig.  Sounds like these 3.0 WKs are a pretty solid setup.
