Title: May 4-6
Post by: OnyxGrizzly on April 11, 2012, 11:39:16 PM
Anyone Going out the weekend of May 4th-6th? Just wondering If someone may want to meet up, since I might be able to go that weekend, since may long is not an option for me :(

Okay! There has been a a crazy amount of activity on this! it is exiting. If anyone wants to know I will be going out Saturday morning, and meeting at McLean store at 830am. If anyone has never been to Mclean you can PM me and we can meet Somewhere In Calgary Prior to heading out  :D I wont be camping out there unless someone has room on thier site for me to join in on   :o  haha. Anyhoo! I Am also not really sure what trails I am going to be going on, however I would like to push myself and the Jeep this weekend so If any members are going Maybe some of us can follow you on some more "intense" runs for some of the day :D. IF not I think it will just be fun to run anything at this point and just have general fun! If anyone has more questions or wants to add anything to my post let me know...

Marsh!

We always meet at the store in Mclean. It's the only one out there and you can't miss it. After staging, your trail lead will take you out to the trail.

If you're really confused on where to go, you can probably meet whomever's going in Bragg creek, most people fuel up there.

I am no pro either I was just thinking of going out to meet some people and hang out, and of course drive the jeeps! I don't want to do anything crazy at all I just want to have a little bit of fun! And before I go or we go maybe we can meet in Calgary somewhere and head out as a unit so there is less confusion :D

Any requirements for this run yet?

Just saying that time of year in mclean there is quite a bit of mud and water so everyone should be prepared with proper recovery gear and a half decent vehicle to go out in.

yeah I think that is smart.

At least tow points, extra clothes, extra water. I mean I don't plan on anything crazy but you do have a point. Maybe if you want to add anything and then maybe i/we can make an official list

Dont go to crazy, me and my wife usually take our kid and two nieces with us from 6 yrs old to 8 yrs old with us in our two Jeeps. Mclean is not Moab. That being said, you certainly can get in trouble just dont think you need to plan for a nuclear disaster ;-) Just be smart, and youll be fine.
Title: Re: May 4-6
Post by: hornblower on April 18, 2012, 08:47:33 PM
I'm aware it's not moab, however it certainly sucks going out and not having proper equipment. Getting stuck and not having anything to get out with is a shitty feeling and by the sounds of this thread so far there are going to be some new to wheeling people out there and if i'm going to join along I think it right to inform people who may not have much experience what they should prepare for.

I don't think there is any reason to expect the worst but none the less Tow Hooks, A strap of some sort, a decent set of tires, full tank of gas and a good attitude should do it.

This run looks to be more tame then the other one planned. I think I will join you guys as well. I have a decent sense of the trails so we can go out and enjoy them. The terrain will be wet mud and snow. Plan to get dirty. Good tires with spare, front and rear tow points, extra food water clothing. Once everyone gets together we can decide what trails are more suitable for the group.  Ive got the day marked in my calendar as may 5th. So im going, this will be a swell stocker run. Post up if you have questions or concerns.

Btw, its real easy to get to the store, Just go west on highway 66 from bragg creek for about 10 minutes and youll see signs for Mclean Creek Recreational Area and Campground, Turn Left(South) and the road winds a little ways up to a store on the right side of the road.

I would really like to join this run as Mclean Creek is close for me. This will be my first time wheeling with a group so hopefully there wont be any really challenging trails. I have on order a CB radio, portable air compressor and some straps coming in soon.  ;D

This is great!  It is awesome to see so many people interested in this run, members and non-members alike.

It usually falls to the OP'er that "he who posts first, volunteers as trail leader/organizer".   With that, I'm going to strongly suggest that a list of requirements gets posted in the first post.  It's been a long held practice that this is done for all runs on the CJA board.   Don't let the fact that some CJA members are weaseling in on the open run (and not coming to the prez's run  ;) ) deter you from leading.   If you have questions about requirements, feel free to PM, but after meeting you, I think you know what kind of basic requirements are needed.

There should be a bunch of Jeeps out on that Sat since the club run is meeting there too.   It should be a snowy, gooey mess!

Don't let it worry you. It's a bunch of Jeeps getting stuck (and then un-stuck) in some slippery mud and snow. As long as folks arrive with rigs that are mechanically sound, have tow points, and good attitudes, everyone will have fun. I'm sure that there are lots of members who have guided lots of tail runs that would be more than happy to help out with some pointers for you. Feel free to PM me or an exec member (or call Kevin between the hours of midnight and 4 AM) if you'd like suggestions.

Anton When Fish East is wet it can be very hard on your rig, not everyone enjoys playing submarine with their jeep in mud pits. Ifyou don't drive it right or make poor descisions  (or listen to poor advice..."its not that deep" ) its easy to toast your clutch, motor or ____________,That said, It can be crap ton of fun I have had both the good and bad experiences with it.

Yup, I was out there on the last weekend before it closed and they put in some larger berms. They also put them right after the staging area over near the falls. Trucks can easily go over, but cars and (non-offroad) trailers won't be able to make it.

So I know its kinda confusing what days are most people going? Just because I want to tag along with some of the members haha

Sent using my mobile communication device!

Most of the "official" folks are going on the member's run on the Saturday. As far as everyone else goes....you posted first, so now it's up to you to organize the herd.  :o

I went out there Thursday and camped out.  Did some light wheeling and for the most part it's not too wet out there.  The road on the way in is in worse shape than the trails.
Still spent 35 bucks at the car wash though

Let's throw some organization at this run. Meet at the store parking lot for 9 am, decide who wants to go where and how many are in the group. Someone bring a chainsaw please...:) first run always seems to have things in the way.
Tow points and good tires would be really nice. I'm seeing a few stockers wanting to join so we can choose trails accordingly.
See you all in the morning. I'll be in a dark red xj on 31's.

If we stop in a suitable spot for a fire then I don't see why not. Let's hope it's not a constant rain.

For anyone at Maclean today. When you LEFT how much snow was accumulated NEXT to the trails? i want to ride tommorrow and where we ride is little used so whatever snow you saw beside the trails you were on will equal the amount of snow on bike trails.
Thanks 8)

Probably 4 inches of wet,  all trails snow covered higher up though,  Road up to Barwell Ridge snow covered from halfway up,  snowing West fischer area at 10 pm.

i think tie rod may have bent a slight bit. hit a good size rut or rock that was covered in snow that i didn't see which cause the alignment off and the steering off center. fixed it later that evening with a few adjustments ;D

Becareful where you go if your worried about snow, We ran the 101 last night and there was already 4-5" on it and it turned into a blizzard/almost rolling in washouts/winchfest.

Yeah, we too a pass after Bragg Creek 4wd gave me the report. i have studded tires but i need time on rubber as our Alberta Offroad Race Series starts next week in Pincher Creek.
i went to the Irricana gravel pits instead. Good training area.
Will ride Maclean Thursday.

The weather started to clear out there by 4PM. With today's temps, I'd wager that most of that snow is disappearing in a hurry.

When we were getting off the trail around 9:00 ish a lot if not most of the snow was already gone, but then it started snowing again...... It doesn't stick very long.
