Hey all, I'm helping a buddy put a rough country 3.5 inch lift on his zj tmrw morning. Anything out of the ordinary that we should look out for? Problem areas or tips that could make for an easier time?

Stock trackbars can be a pain to remove and lower control arms might be to long. Stock shocks I'm the front can be a pain too if there's a lot of rust

Use anti seize on all the bolts when reinstalling them cause it will need to come apart again in the future ::)

Thanks for the input guys.
I had him spray everything with penetrating oil for the last few days constantly so hopefully that helps a bit with rust. Owning a jdm truck I tend to forget how much I hate rusty hardware.
I don't know why I agree to these things. I know he still won't come wheel the thing with me! Haha

Since your taking it all apart, purchase and install Clayton springs instead to soften the ride ;)

Clayton springs? Never heard of. He ordered springs with the kit. Can't remember if he is cheaping out and moving fronts to the rear or actually listened to me and got 4 new springs.
I was pushing for old man emu from the get go but both if us being ex winnipegers he is as cheap and stubborn as me.

I was pushing for old man emu from the get go but both if us being ex winnipegers he is as cheap and stubborn as me.
I'm from Winnipeg too, I remember how cheap people were... ::)

Remember to pre load the bushings when retorquing control arms and what not.
Torquing them in the air at full droop, will force them to stay in a position they dont nomally ride in... this leads to premature distruction. ;)

RC springs are fine. Their shocks are poopy. I Actually like my RC springs. It's all I like RC though. And FYI putting the front springs to the rear is fine. They are almost identical to aftermarket 4" springs!

Nice thing about RC springs is that they are typically longer, harder to unseat.

Johnny mentioned that the trackbacks are a PITA, which he would know. What he didn't say is that the bloody torx screw on top is in there with loctite, and if you don't cook it with a torch or something first, you may be breaking tools and cutting that mother out. Please heat it up first, we put enough leverage on that part in the past that John started to lift the old ZJ a bit and it still didn't budge.

We ran into issues with the track bar on the axle mount. I convinced my bud to hold off on the install to get an adjustable track bar and new hardware so we can cut the original out and not drill a new hole, weakening the mount.
That track bar is one of the poorest designs I've ever seen. That little flag nut on the back! Wtf is that.

bolt is probably seized in the bushing.
two options are the one you've stated, or just cut the thing out and run to PNP and get another bolt out of any XJ/ZJ there. same bolt. surprisingly they seem to come out no issue.
call around, i would bet modern has one on the shelf.
i learnt this on my current lift...... life lessons!

Yes the bolt is for sure seized in the bushing. My buddy is very lazy, he won't be going to pnp for a new bolt. It will take him another month to even decide what track bar to order.
It was funny when he first picked up the kit and read the instructions. "It will only take 3 to 5 hours"
Ya right, on a jeep in sunny Southern California. This is Canada and bolts rust.

Sounds like you shouldn't waste your time with building his ZJ for him if he isn't that into it, won't wheel it with you, or might just sell it... I've been there done that and in the end it really isnt worth the time and effort. Either way, good luck with it!

Ill still help him. He is just gonna be doing the vast majority of the work. I'm like an advisor!! Hahaha
