So I moved here from New Brunswick and its time to build a new bogger. its a budget build so Im getting an XJ. now a couple questions I have are:
how much lift do I want for the terrain in waiparous and mclean creek areas and any other big spots (i have never been wheelin in alberta). i dont want to be slowed down because i dont have enough. im debating between a 4.5'' from rough country and a 6.5'' by rusty off road. if people have anything bad to say about these please let me know what the issues were. I will be running 33x12.5 inch tires, if you say they will rub im only gonna give you my answer: grinder, sawzall, so many ways around this ;)
Im also debating between auto and manual, i like manual but at the same time i like auto so i can relax and drink a cold one. i guess this is more a personal preference but if you want to leave me some reasoning behind your opinion that would be great, like if there are a lot of rocky hill climbs and stuff ill prob go auto.
Thank you in advance to who ever feels like giving there opinions and helping me out.
-
There are many pros and cons wirh many different lift heights as well as brands.
I run a 4.5 inch x series rough country lift on 33s. Wheel wells have all been clearanced for 35s with sazall and grinder and rear cut and folded. Rear flares are raised and of rear yj sport. $20. Fronts are raised and are rear tj sport flares. Lots of pros and cons here. (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/04/23/9y3ajyzy.jpg)(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/04/23/ytu2yguj.jpg)
-
Oh and with an auto you will want to run 488 or gears and with a manuel 456 or 411 gears in order to make everything work.
-
sawzall + grinder = 4.5" lift is plenty.
i have some YJ flares you can have cheap if you want on this XJ build.
if you are going XJ i'd go with a 97 and up; you can get the better diffs with those.
good luck!
-
thanks guys, and there isnt much around for 97 and up at the moment, would it be just as easy to swap a whole rear end out of a parts jeep 97+? i can do all the work myself just wondering if it would be a bolt in swap.
-
Any XJ rear end should be a bolt in swap.
As for the "grabbing a cold one while driving", I hope you mean soda.

regarding the rough country x series did you need the lengthened rear shaft as well as the slip yoke eliminator? and any issues about dropping the tcase? are there ways around this to keep ground clearance and much as possible? thanks
-
Went with a hackin tap and new drive shaft when lift was installed. Did not install transfer case drop as not required.
Tranfer case has the two piece tail cone so probably could have gotten away with it with no vibes but original driveshaft was pooched. Most newer jeeps with the one piece tail shaft require a slip yoke eliminator to work. There are a couple different aftermaket suppliers who make raised crossmember/skid plate combos where you can gain an inch or two clearance over stock.

I as well run 33's with about 4.5-5" of lift and fender trimming. Tires don't rub at all. I use TJ flares to cover everything up. I haven't seen or heard much good from rough country or rustys. If you're looking for a good bang for buck check iron rock offroad or zone, if you want to have the best then try Clayton off road.
Lots of mud, trails and climbs out here. Not much for rock. Auto or stick is your choice, both are common. Look for 1997-1999 ideal, 1991-1996 is second, either way look for hi pinion front dan30 and Chrysler 8.25 rear. 242 or 231 are both good t/cases.

Is there a link to a thread you know of that will tell me how to tell the type of front axel, rear end and the differences between the tcases whle im looking at jeeps, are they easy to tell from what they look like or are they more specific to the model, year and engine/tranny combo?

Nah. Just common sense and not putting yourself and others at risk.

I don't think this guy has much common sense. But that's not new for him... ;D

Welcome to Alberta! :D
I'm assuming that by cold one you meant a cola? Consuming alcohol on the trail here is the same as drinking on the road and is subject to fines and all sorts of other nasty stuff. Not only is it stupid but you'll pretty much find with any club here in Alberta that drinking while operating a motorvehicle will get you ejected from the run pretty quick.
You say you are wanting to build a bogger? "BOGGER" here has a bit of a bad rep that goes with it. It brings to mind people who tear up and down creeks and rip back and forth thru meadows does massive trail damage and giving the offroad community in general a bad name. If this is your intent then please go home. If needed we can show you the way.
Personally for building an XJ I like the auto. The AW4 automatic that came in the XJs is a very stout tranny. Add a cooler and do the electrical mod for locking it down into 1st or 2nd gear(Google 2nd gear please mod) and you should have no problems with it baring getting water in it.

That's right! Is that why your back, finally decided to abide by them?
-
Listen bro, if you want to wheel in Alberta then keep in mind there is not the black earth mud like back home, so like said earlier a bogger rig is not in tune with the type of wheeling we do here. Try to imagine a mix between the grand canyon and Ontario landscape. and the land does not regenerate at all like back home either. a rut this year will be a bigger one next year and so on.
you want a rig the will get you good clearance, easy to find parts and you enjoy how it feels. There is nothing wrong with auto if thats your thing, many people hate on them because, well this is the internet and they can. I love em, but prefer to have more control over my shifting and engine breaking so I run Standard.
so get what you like and run it, build some friends in the community and well read the rules and follow them and hit up a run to see if it is your thing, if not look around for another club.
cheers

And to the OP....there is a ton of great knowledge here about XJ's and other rigs...but you'll probably find that if you're looking to consume alcohol while driving or deliberately run through all sorts of mud, you won't get such a warm reception.
-
Perhaps Bannedforlife can give you some pointers on driving drunk and running boggers.
and where's the admins when the personal attacks start happening?
maybe people should actually guide the OP in the right direction rather then ripping him a new one and pouncing on everyone the rocks the boat.
I'm usually quite but this place is a joke sometimes
oh and you already know the answer is classifieds so why you keep asking?

WWW.naxja.org has tons of XJ specific info.
For a quick run down I'll stick to mid to late 90s XJs. All had front D30 diffs. Rear diffs were either D35 or Chysler 8.25s. The 8.25 is a bit stronger but the D35 has more aftermarket stuff. Popular/easy swaps are Ford 8.8s and D44s. Gears were either 3.07s with the manual tranny or 3.55s with auto. T-cases was the Command Trac(NP231 plain old 2wd/4wd/N/4low) available in stick or auto. Select-trac(NP242) came with auto only and added an AWD function.
If you are going 33s and won't be swapping gears right away then go auto. 33s and 3.55s is doable. 33s and 3.07s will suck big time and you'll be slipping the clutch a lot to get going.

Another site for XJ's is www.xjtalk.com , I would say an Xj is more cut out for anything other than mud,.. But I have never been a fan of it. BTW another Eastern convert (Ontario) celebrating 11 yrs in June in Alberta :)

I've tried to nuke most of the BS in the thread and leave the reasonable stuff behind.
Generally speaking we try to keep the flame wars to a minimum here (although sometimes they can be entertaining ;)) ... but the one thing we as a club are pretty passionate about is the wise use of what few trails we do have left... which includes not drinking on the trails. If thats not your thing there's not much I can do about it... but don't expect us to just let it go on the site.
I would suggest if you're just here for the classifieds you might find Kijiji a bit better as its all ads and no comments or talk. It has a pretty decent search function so you can pretty much find what you're looking for if it's there. This site is not really a public forum... it belongs to the CJA and is administered and paid for out of our pockets so it's run the way we want.

An the unjust ban hammer was laid down. Which I know it's your site and you may do and have who you wish on it. But banning by association now? Seems a little sad. I generally stay out of the ring here, but I feel strongly about rightful ejections instead of by association.
Honesty the first "questionable" post was worded with no negative intentions, then personal attacks started. Shame on people who don't recognize someone who can be a asset to any organization, shame on banning the people around said person, and it is a shame on the knowledge base that is lost without "questionable" people and their associations.
Now I wait for my ban notification

He's no asset in any way shape or form.
Lets get back to the original topic.

Dude....WTF are you on about?
IF someone got banned, it was for being an arse. Consistently. He wasn't banned for being associated with anyone - hw was banned for doing the same things that got him banned in his first incarnation on this site.

Unjust ban hammer?... one person was banned who has been banned repeatedly before. He came back under a new user name but made it obvious to us who it was. At first it was decided he was being reasonable even if his username was a bit of a poke at the admins and we'd just let it go. Then he posted up something he knows goes completely against what the CJA stands for... it almost looks like he gets a kick out of seeing how far he can push us. I had hoped it wouldn't come to banning him yet again... but I won't stand for someone pissing in my pool either.
As for banning you... you're entitled to your own opinion and thats cool... not about to ban you for that. If you start screwing around with admins or keep arguing a point in open forums thats when we start getting all ban happy.

well this escalated quickly, I read the rules and dont have a problem leaving the beer at home. and by bogger i didnt mean ruining the land and trails, going off trail makin my own. the small town im from its quite normal to have a couple brew (responsibly) and there isnt any exceptions on where to go wheeling for the most part.. Either way im here to enjoy the trails and have some fun. thank you to the people who were reasonable about pointing me in the right direction.
-
There were two bans not just one, I'd rather discuss via pm or a simple phone call pm for my number
-
Oops... my bad... I went a little wide with IP ban. That has been corrected and my apologies to anyone that couldn't log in for a bit there ;)

I'm sure you'll have a blast wheeling out here, lots of good trails and good people. We keep the cold ones for around the camp fire at the end of he day too. This is usually the time of year when some minor drama gets on the forum. It's been a long winter.

;) that ban hammer can get heavy, no worries bud.
I'm an automatic guy myself. RADesigns makes a rail shifter for an aw4 which is the tranny found in most xj's. this tiny shifter allows you to select 1st 2nd 3rd or OD with the movement of 2 fingers. I have one in my tj and is an asset in any automatic. It's like having a standard with no clutch. Nothing like gearing down instantly when you need it on a steep uphill. If you ever want to check it out in person ill show you in my jeep. Link to their site:

I guess the revised they design since I bought mine but basically the same thing.

Welcome to the site. As mentioned and I'm sure you noticed the people on here are pretty passionate about the club and the respect for our trails. Hope you find a rig to build up and we can see you on the trails.
I have nothing useful to add in regards to xj's so I will stop with that.

Yeah that looks like an awesome mod for an AW4! More in-depth than just the 1st-2nd gear lockout! Thanks for sharing :)

Forgot to mention, matched with the rail shifter if you wire in a torque converter lock up switch you can have engine retardation when going down hills as well. Super easy install. Autos for the win!

Check out this Wiki, it made it easier to narrow down the components to look for in a XJ

Pfffffft.... says the guy who drives an updated version of the XJ. You have a frame and round headlights..... right off the bat you lost 1/3rd of your flex by having a frame, and we have an engine with actual torque.
Wasn't your Jeep your wife's old one?
