Title: Need a balljoint reamer help!
Post by: JadeMonkey07 on May 01, 2013, 09:06:16 PM
Anyone have a 1.5inch/ft reamer also known as a  7deg reamer? Need it for my highsteer kit install. The tool is usually used for chevy 1ton ball joints

Cheapest iv seen is 90 bucks, for one hole? I would trade a favor for its use if you've got one!

Do you need it right away?

I'm pretty sure I have one in my toolbox but unfortunately it's in BC . I can have it here in Calgary in 2 weeks and no favor is needed in return.

1/2 inch chuck?

Yup. I have a lot of tools left over from my past life working on John Deere equipment.

I checked auto value and partsource, they both wanted to sell me one. If you could bring it in that would be fantastic!

So tubby did his best(thanks again) checked everywhere and asked everyone. Instead of letting me borrow one is there anyone who is willing to have me drop by and use it at their place? The job really isnt going to take long. Im willing to travel and bring coffee/lunch/ beer, Pick your poison.

Northern metallic has them.

They really arent a loaner type tool. Any chatter at all will destroy the more common 75$ ones everyone has. Which is almost unavoidable when doing them by hand.

Most of the cheaper ones are only good for a couple of holes before they need sharpening or thrown out anyways.

Better of to just get one of your own.

I weld my knuckels to a jig and use a good vice to clamp them in the drill press when I do them. And I still dont get a lot of milage out one.

Yeah...  I agree will Bill on this. It sucks to spend that much on a tool that you use once, but it is a rather disposable tool seeing as how it will not be as sharp when you return it and there is high possibility in really messing it up.

I tacked a pitman arm to the drill press and went at her with mine.  Was not brave enough to try it by hand...  I got mine at Gregg's

Wondering if a machine shop would do it?

Yeah looks like i might be leaning that direction. But for the price ill go for the 13/16ths bore out with an adapter. I wanted to do it the direction with the least metal removed to start but i just dont have the cash to spare. Thanks for the replies and effort by everyone! Ill let you know how it goes

Also been searching for one of these for enlarging for a slightly larger tie-rod on a my race car. Remembered Bill reaming out my YJ knuckles for 1 ton ends. I've haven't seen much variation in taper...and most/all tierods 1.5" in 1' taper? Including japanese?

Bill, if I call Northern Metallic and ask for a tie rod reamer will they know what I'm talking about? No one else seems too... Also, If I try Greggs is it this Viking part I can see in their catalog?

I wonder if its just a better idea to call a machine shop?

Just meant it feels good to get a 2 month thought process out of your head, or in my case, usually an obsession :)
