Basic roll cage done on a CJ5 last week. I dont post much of what I do here, but I thought the board has been lacking of much tech lately. So here's my small contribution.
This a mild cage for a restored CJ5. Not intended for hardcore multiple use, although it is tied into the frame at the A pillar. I had to make the overheads as high as possible due to the owner being a really big guy. I did a cage for this jeep before it was restored about 7 years ago, but the owner kept ringing his head off the overheads.
Personally I didnt see the problem when I built the first version..........haha

This is an old fashion fast back style. Not meant for rear passengers. The main pillars are done with 1.75" 120 wall and the smaller intersecting stuff is 1.5" 120 wall.
I didnt do picks of the tie ins, but they use a leaf bushing at the frame and .5" conveyor belt under the body to provide decent isolation.
The ending is all done using various dies on a tube shark bench style bender.

For the notching I use a pro tools notcher which you can see here.

That looks awesome. Quit the transformation from when it was originally purchased from crazydave.

Nice job! I have been contemplating a full cage for my CJ-7...
-
Definately an idea if you are going to wheel.
And depending on how you set it up, and can stiffen up the frame a bit. Which is good for CJ's since they are prone to having frame integrity issues.
-
hey Billy, did you go through the tub to the frame on the initial set up or do the plate/sandwich deal with bolts?
-
Nice welds! Looks great!
I want a cage my 2door Xj SO BAD just don't have the means!
-
Did the plate sandwich and a pinned section on the a pillar to make it easily removable for painting.

Bnine, bringing this old topic back to life, I am not sure who your with but I have been searching for roll cage tech, I have a feeling I may need it soon, but I still want to keep the stock top accessories useable.
can these be built to fit under a hard top?

I.m finally getting a jd squared model 32 hydraulic bender after playing around for 2 yrs thinking about it. To help pay for it I.m thinking of doing bends for others. Anyone out there know how to use this thing? I,m gonna use some old tubing I have laying around for practice , when I get good I.ll do bends for others, but if anyone out there has experience with this bender call me. To start I.m going to get the 1-3/4 5.5 radius 180 degree The bender can do up to 2 inch x .250 wall DOM too. Yeah baby Mike 403 932 4659

Yeah. There are lots of cage options out there. Most can be made to fit with factory padding, sound bars, etc etc.
You can go full custom with someone like me but I'm not sure it's warranted. It is significantly more money than just having a basic add on welded/bolted in.
But yeah. I do cages for people once occosionally.

Thanks for the input, after posting this got a text from noel steering me in the right direction, getting a bolt in already fabbed I think, looking at poison spyder's cage.
-
Rock hard does bolt ins, PSC's are mostly weld in, unless they have a new one.
If you are doing a weld in, you will still need someone to burn it in for you. Unless you do your own welding.
Let me know if you need help with that. I do those as well.
