Title: thoughts...
Post by: bullitt85 on July 31, 2013, 08:06:08 PM
I want to get some more top end power out of my jeep without increasing the weight to much.
I have been bombing threads on the subject stroker, different engines for it in this area, quadratec had a long 6? I think I couldnt find it to link it again maybe its gone but is this something that would just bolt in? they claimed 280 HP.
Or should I just send mine into the shop for the winter and get all the power I can from it?
anyone have any experience in either of these areas I would love to hear your story and how it all turned out, or even your thought on getting more power into the jeep, cost isnt a big issue.

Trent, I can't recall what year your tj is but Banks Power has a turbo kit that's a pretty good deal. Works with your computer. 4.0L respond well to boost:) A stroked 4.0L is nice too. There are super chargers as well. Easiest way to start is intake and electric fan, you already have exhaust.
Differential gears  could be another option as well.

1) Google "Hesco" racing
2) get phone number
3) call
4) ask for "Bennie"
5) have pad and paper ready
6) listen; don't talk unless its to clarify what he has said
7) follow instructions

Bennie is a 4.0L guru,.. You want power from a I6 he will tell you how to do so.

the supercharger does interest me, the turbo not so much, not a fan of lag. its an 03 rubicon.

Also sent Bennie an email. Hope that will not bother him much.

More reading is kinda leaning to stroking 4.6/4.7 then super charging. however I assume this will just send a rod through a 10k set up?

next question : some forums are talking about sea level for stroking and pinging at rockies heights... I am completely out of my depth even reading the stroker forums not making much sense. anyone here stroked out?

Boost is the only replacement for displacement, and that's reaching. Boost = more displacement. Displacement is a measurement of how much atomized fuel air mixture that can fit in an engine. When you double that, you double the displacement. At sea level 14.7 psi atmos pressure. A 4.0 will develop 190 hp.  At 14.7 psi boost, 380hp. This is a rule of thumb though, you can get way higher #s from the same boost through inter cooling/water ethanol injection etc etc. there is NO lag when turbo matched for the application  correctly. A teeeeeny turbo spools CRAZY fast. Think a small Chrysler 2.2. Put that on a 4.0 the exhaust coming out would spool so quick you'd think it was nitrous. That is not the reason I'd choose supercharging over turbo. The ONLY reason to do a supercharger is... Placement. The turbo would be placed LOW on the engine making it susceptible to branches, mud, objects. Not good for wheeling. Pop a hose in the mud, bye bye motor. Just a small amount of info on boost.

That's what she said.
I'd do gears first though, especially if you went up in tire size. I had 4.88s on 33s (over geared) EPIC. It was like a go kart. The acceleration was incredible. From a slow rolling start I could break the tires loose, hard. Third gear chirped. Sooo much fun.

Turbos get mounted high on passenger side next to engine so it's a none issue.

after most of the last week or so researching this and a majority of jeep forums reviews/suggestions I think I am looking towards golen 4.6 stroker with the little extras to push over that 300 mark. Hopefully will order the engine next month. will try this and if I still want a little more it will be a super charger at 6psi boost.
Thanks for the comments guys, any other information will be very helpful.

I'm pretty certain golen can build it for boost, I'll assume forged bottom end and maybe lower compression ratio. But if some is good, more is better right ;D

they have a stroker boost package, but its only 350hp but if I go with the supercharger that gives a normal 4.0l 100hp I should be pushin over 400... I doubt it will get that far. I will probably be very happy with just the stroker.

Check out 505 performace out of Florida. I got my new cam, lifters, pushrods, etc through them. Great price and more than willing to discuss needs.

The editor of Canada 4wdrive slapped a 5.0 in his a few years back.  You could ask Google about that mod.

I run a 4.5l long rod stroker. Right around 300hp. I do run it on premium fuel as it almost 11:1 compression. Runs knock free on stock programming.

Message me if you want to discuss build recipe. Options. Etc etc.
