Title: stupid ZJ tranny
Post by: JackstandJohnny on August 07, 2013, 01:35:29 PM
95 ZJ, 46RH tranny. V8.  google points towards a lot of info on the 46re but theres not much on the hydraulic versions of these trannies.

wife drove jeep into DEEP mud hole. turns out the snorkel works; tranny didn't like it. came out and no first gear.

so; after the dunk:

no first gear at all. it went in once, and shifted HARD out of first and into second; hasn't gone into first again. won't do it when i manually shift to 1 either.
also, it hangs way to long in second. when it finally shifts into 3rd its good. 3 and overdrive are good. no issues. reverse no issues.

pulled pan and fluid looked ok; no visible mud really in it. fluid cleanish; it is due for a clean though.

pulled the pan and filter; haven't put it back together yet because i'm installing a tranny drain plug; so i can finish flushing it tonight.

just looking for ideas; at work and its driving me crazy, and i'm already tempted to just gut it and find a niner.....

That sucks...  You should have installed a tranny snorkel too. And while you are it: axle snorkels, gas tank snorkel, washer fluid snorkel and cabin snorkel are all in order....

The water faeries do not like you Johnny. Either that, or it's your Karma for driving a Sleezy Zee.

Those transmissions are crap when they arent wheeled. Unfortunately, as long as you run them, you are going to plagued with issues.

i assume you mean they are crap billy? i'd agree.

fluid flush helped a fair bit.  i got first back again at least when i put it into manual mode. cycles through all gears again. seems to want to not downshift into first when its in D from a start. it willl start out in second unless i floor it. then it hits first.

guess i'll drive it like i stole it lol.

thinking its time to find a manual to put behind it.... nv3500 or maybe an AX15 if i can find that rare Dakota with the manual and V8....

yeah, they just dont seem to be a reliable transmission.

Yeah, that would be a nice swap. There's a few of those around.

Done some research. It's the route I would go....... Costly so it's gonna be a timely venture. As long as the auto can hang on for a whole as I collect parts all good..... Seems to me it will. Shifting better now at least......

Hey Johnny,

Would a 5speed out of a 2000 2wd Dakota that has the 4.7 work for you??? I know where there is one for cheap, real cheap... but it does need work. Let me know.

It would bolt up to the 5.2, but the 2wd tailshaft has no provisions for attaching a transfer case, and swapping the tailshaft requires a output shaft swap as well.
