Title: How closely do you check your credit card statements?
Post by: Vinman on January 09, 2014, 08:53:08 PM
I just discovered that somebody has been enjoying my credit card lately.
Since fornicating October!!!,

16 transactions totalling $953.75, of that I am on the hook for $536.46 since those charges are over 60 days old!!!

All were at gas stations for non attention raising amounts, most were between $40-$50 with a couple over $100.

13 were at the Esso at 2619-14 st. SW, 2 at PetroCanada 120-36 St and 1 at PetroCanada 615 Shaw Cliffe.

I have never been at any of the stations in my life.

I still can't believe I didn't catch this sooner as I usually go over my online statements regularly. I guess the smallish amounts slipped by until I noticed one from earlier this week from the Esso for $39.00 and then started really looking at previous months statements.

I am urinated at myself for not catching this sooner and will obviously pay a little closer attention in the future.

Cloned card, RBC visa and according to them, they will only cover losses that are reporting within 60 days. I will be taking a good look at the card agreement this weekend to ensure that is written and if not, will not let it go.

Funny part is, at first I only noticed one bad transaction and the they guy at VISA absolutely assured mw that I must be mistaken since the card transaction confirmed the card was physically used as opposed to an internet fraud. He also said it is very, very rare to have a chipped card cloned.

I keep ALL my receipts of any kind and when I could not match up the amount, I started looking a bit closer. You can bet your arse, I'll be looking at the statements a lot closer now.

They won't show you the tapes, they only way they will is if you file a police report and the investigating officer goes there to look through them. And that hinges on whether or not the store has kept the footage from that date or if the camera was actually positioned in such a way that you have footage of someone actually using the fraudulent card.

Well, after reviewing the card agreement, I could not find any mention of a time limit for reporting an unauthorized CC use.
I searched briefly on Canadian cardholder liabilities and it also does not mention a timeframe to report, only that the cardholder is protected.
I guess I'll be on the phone with Visa for a while tomorrow night.

Were the transactions PIN confirmed or were they swipes/manual keys?

They can hold you responsible for any charges made that were PIN/ConnectID or password confirmed prior to you reporting the card compromised.

Also, there is a section that refers to the statements that are provided by the issuer. They are probably going to quote this, ask why you did not follow the cardholder agreement and say that covering the charges from the last 60 days was a good will consideration.
