hey guys, so I changed the oil on my jeep before the winter storm hit, my next oil change should be at 300k but since the snow storm has hit I have noticed that the ticking I get from the engine has increased I didn't mind it because it was only loud on cold starts, fast forward to last night im coming home from work and I noticed that my oil pressure is going down in 3d gear, I shifted to 4 and it started to go up again then started to go down, I put it in 5th and it went up again.
Since we are having warmer weather now I have noticed that the jeep is dripping oil again, not a lot with in 3 days there was about 2 inch wide oil spill, never though nothing of it since my rear main seal has been leaky for 3 years lol.
I come to check on the oil today after taking my dog to the park to find I have NONE only the tip of the dip stick has some oil on it , I added oil to it but it took about 4 liters.... I still have about 5000 kms to drive before the next oil change, what has went wrong here? I doubt its leaking out of the rear main seal this much as I just noticed it 3 days ago
im running 5w30 oil full synthetic
any ideas ? thanks

is it blowing blue at all?
last time i had a 4L that blew through oil that fast it was all going through the valve seals/guides in the head. i was going through a litre per fill up.
the head was so bad i just swapped the motor instead of rebuilding it.
no clue if its similar for you but that was mine. i suggest it because for you to actually burn that much oil due to bad piston rings you would be smoking people out at red lights.

nope not blue smoke its not burning oil at all, it smokes white but that's because of the cold...

Apparently synthetic doesn't burn near as much blue as conventional oil.

Ccv system could be plugged up solid like mine. Air pressure inside the motor pushes oil out all the seals and into the air intake.

Did you say 300,000 kms. I think 5w30 even syn might be a little light. Next oc try good ol rotella 15w40. A jeep should have no issues cranking with that at -30. A diesel oil has more cleaning "thingys" and holding "Thingys". Its worth a try. And much cheaper than refilling with syn.

Yes.

That's good oil and I run it lots of the fleet equipment that I maintain, but only in the summer
In the winter I change everything over to something lighter, 10w30 or even 0w30 synthetic. That 15w40 gets pretty thick at anything below -20c, especially when it's got some miles on it and not brand new anymore.

I think you may be onto something. I haven't changed my oil in 9-10 months. IIRC I used the rest of my 5-40 syn rottella t6. So I bet its a mix 50-50. But still 10-30 should crank just fine. Its what the jeep was meant to have in it. And guess what rotella conventional comes in 10-30. I trust shell. You can Google rotella+jeep+Bob is the oil guy. And everyone says the same thing. DO IT. Oh PS the best place to get the 10w30 is at PA.

zinc
No zinc in rotella either. They pulled it 5 or 6 years ago. Although it was the last oil to contain significant amounts of the zinc base lube.

I was just being an @ssh@t and referring to the thread about zinc in oil and belt dressing. My bad.
