Title: Which gear oil in a NV3550 tranny
Post by: Wif on June 11, 2006, 11:37:38 AM
I know Chrysler recommends Mopar 4874464 (maybe Pennzoil Syncromesh) .. anyone use anything else. My G/B seems a little noisy on idle in neutral with the clutch out .. would 75W-90 work ??

3550's specify the fancy dodge syncromesh. 75 90 would be a lot heavier and cant say how it would work.

I have heard of people using the aftermarket synchromesh stuff but never tried it myself.

I think you would find quite a few discussions on the topic if you search over at

I know this thread is old but I just recently called the dealership looking for this stuff and they want $27 a litre.  I'm gunna go with some quaker state synchromesh from good'ol napa for half that price.

I don't understand how they figure they can sell this junk for that much.  I don't remember paying near that last time I bought it from the dealership but that was a while ago.

EDIT** I just found this for whomever wants to try it.

Lubrication:
Jeep/Dodge have a part number for Lubricant for the NV3550:  4874464   We have been advised, however, by our New Venture rep that a 30 wt non foaming gear oil is suitable for this transmission, and will be covered under warranty. It uses about 2.2 qts. NOTE: It is NOT recommended to use ATF in this trans.

Here is a listing of most of the MTFs on the market.  Compare and decide.

This is from a NV4500 & NV3550 manual I downloaded...be warned...and this is from Advanced Adapters - not dealerships. I had to to buy some for my 4500 :'(

TRANSMISSION LUBRICATION:

The NV4500 transmission uses approximately one gallon of synthetic oil. This oil is available at your local Dodge authorized
dealer under Part No. 4874459 (quart), or your local GM authorized dealer under Part No. 12346190 (quart). Unlike regular
petroleum oil that breaks down when it gets too hot, this synthetic oil is made up of different properties that do not break down.
The transmissions are also equipped with synchronizer rings that are made of a fibrous material. The wrong fluid will cause the
unit to develop “sticky” shifting. If the wrong fluid is used, more than likely you will have to have your transmission rebuilt.
DO NOT SUBSTITUTE any other lubricant as internal damage will occur.
NOTE: Castrol Syntech is NOT the same as Castrol Syntorq.
