I'm looking at a used 04 Rubi for a friend to possibly purchase. Obviously, I can't start wrenching on someone's rig so I'm just trying to figure out if it's likely to be serious or just a sensor issue somewhere? It would be highly unlikely that there would be a serious issue INSIDE both diffs at the same time right? If I can hear each compressor run then stop, I'm assuming the compressors are not the problem and they have built up the whopping 5PSI of pressure required and no leaks? So possibly a sensor issue? Tcase sensor not sensing 4LOW?. Rear sensor at diff not sensing the rear is engaged, thus not allowing front to engage? Anyone think I'm on the right track here. This Rubi seems to be a solid jeep otherwise for a decent price so I'd hate to pass on it for what may be a simple issue...opinions please. thanks.

From what I have researched on the TJ rubicons, the fittings on the compressor like to crack, therefore not providing enough pressure to the lockers.... Or the air leaks out after the compressors stop pumping.
Lots of write ups on relocating them up into the engine bay.
But, I have an XJ, so I know nuttin....

If they are leaking the compressors will continue to run.
The sensor is just a dummy light that grounds out via a metallic contact in the housing. A cracked wire, completely torn out wires, a worn contact, are just a few things that can be wrong with that sensor, causing a falishing light when in actuality the lockers are operating perfectly normal.
If the lockers arent operating normal then it is time to look at compressors, the dash switch, cracked bulkhead fitting, etc etc etc.
But it sounds to me like the lockers are probably operating normally, and there is something wrong with the sensor or wiring to the sensors.
Lock it up somewhere dry and do a few gentle turns to confirm operation for sure and that will elimate any doubt.
