Title: 1-1/4" x 12 tap needed
Post by: Vinman on March 03, 2014, 02:14:53 PM
Anybody have a 1-1/4" x 12 tap I could borrow the use of? I just need to chase one thread on a control arm.
I could come to your place and chase the thread and not take the tap with me.

Pretty sure I have a speed tap in that size you can have. Will double check when I get home.
That is 1/4 inch right ?

1-1/4" fine thread for the lower control arms, not 1/4"

If you can not find one, I have made thread chasers by cutting flutes into gr8 bolts, run a nut on first and then spin it off to clean the threads up. Won't cut new threads but will usually clean up existing threads if they aren't totally destroyed.

Yeah, I thought of that and if I can't borrow a tap that's what I'll do. The arms are brand new and the supplier already said he will send me another but I'll try and fix this one rather than wait a couple of weeks.
It's just one little bur about an inch and a half inside the hollow arm so I can't get to it with a file.
I assume the arm is chromoly so it's a bit tough.

Well, I looked all over for a grade eight bolt to modify but couldn't find one. (by "look all over" I mean my garage). Then I kept seeing this flex  joint with a shank that is waaaay longer than it has to be so out came the grinder and voila, instant flex joint with built-in thread chaser.
Worked like a charm, thanks cLAY.

Thanks Bill, you'll have to check these Metal Cloak arms out, they look pretty good but time will tell.

Fairly light, pretty sure they are lighter than the Curries I ran for a while. I know they absorb small bumps and road cracks better.
