Title: Jeep tj Rear Popping noise followed by a lurching motion
Post by: EviLAnTo on November 20, 2014, 09:04:01 PM
It happened this morning on the way to school, i was driving around a corner and a loud pop came from what felt like the rear diff.
on my way home this happened the whole way, i noticed it, but when i pushed in the clutch and 'glided' the popping wasn't as prominent.
when im in gear the pop will happen followed by a bucking or sudden lurching motion, and would then try to kick me out of gear.
i did a visual check and nothing seems to be out of place.

if it matters at all i just 'rebuilt' the front driveshaft.

Do you have a locker? Are you in 4wd on dry roads?

What you are describing is drivetrain unloading due to bind up somewhere.

Its always a good idea to start at the last thing you did. So make sure you are in 2wd and then if its still happening, disco the front shaft from the pinion, tie it up and test it again.

Still doing it after that, we will go from there.

If you have a D35 the spider gears may be shot and causing the rear end to bind up and unload. But we can get to that after the initial checks of the front driveshaft and front end.

So i did as you reccomended and tied up the front shaft, (4wd was not engaged)
the noise and bucking motion is still there. Im debating bringing it into a shop , Im not
too comfortable working with gearing and transmissions/dont think i have all the tools.
