Fellas, my 01 TJ is puking fluid at the steering box. Whats a steering box worth?? Can one be bought at Napa or any other parts store or is this an OEM only type of thing?

3 somethin with about a 60-80 core.
Think it ends up around 280.
In that neighborhood at least.

I got mine at Bumper to Bumper. That cost sounds about right from what I remember.
Bumper to bumper sells steering boxes that are rebuilt in Manitoba, which I like. Makes me feel like there is better quality than a foreign rebuilt unit. I was really pleasantly surprised by how much tighter the new box felt.
Hydrasteer (Pat's Driveline) can sell you a rebuilt unit as well, or rebuild yours. For my XJ it was cheaper to buy one from Bumper to bumper though.

Don't bother. It'l just start leaking again. TJ steering boxes are notorious pieces of crap.
Buy a steering box from a 98-99 V8 4x4 Dakota/Durango. It'll bolt right up, is much stouter than the TJ unit, and has a better turning ratio (3 turns lock to lock, as oppose to the TJ's 3.5, IMS)
Hope that helps.

Would that also work for a 94 YJ?

Yes. As far as I know.

with regard to the dakota steering box...
On an XJ, you need to fabricate a spacer to move the box out about 3/4" more from the frame to account for the larger cylinder. It will probably be the same for your application. Also, asking around on other web sites, it seems that getting a box that still gives you the correct turning radius is kind of hit and miss. Some guys that put Dakota boxes into their XJ's experienced a big difference in how tightly their vehicles could turn.
The dakota boxes I priced were about $140 more than the stock replacement XJ box, though I did find a low mileage one at a local wrecker for $270. Check www.car-part.com
For me, I got 9 years out of the factory box. I'm probably not going to disentegrate a replacement one too quickly.
