Title: What's in your toolbox?
Post by: Black Betty on April 11, 2015, 07:08:24 AM
In the past few months I have invested quite a bit in tools.  Having the right tools for the job makes all the world of difference when out in the garage wrenching, it's kind of like having an easy button in some cases.  Surprisingly, some of the tools I bought for specific projects and ended up using them more then I thought.

My most used tools as of late,

ball joint press
Cold chisel set
Ball peen hammer
Dead blow hammer
Pick and hook set
3/8 air ratchet
3/4"x 48" breaker bar (this thing has serious torque)
Slide hammer
Tap and die set

What are your go to tools?  Or tools that made jobs much more easier to complete?

I hear you on the 3/4" breaker bar. I don't even bother with a 1/2" one, just use a 3/4"-1/2" adapter on the 3/4" bar.

Flex head ratchet wrenches are often my goto tools. No flex head are almost useless.  Same with my 1/2" and 3/8" flex head ratchets.  About the only time I use my non-flex wrenches and ratchets is for busting stuff loose and I'm worried about damaging the flex ones or the flex wrenches are too bulky.

For a 3/8" impact I've gone cordless. I have a dewalt at work and makita at home both work equally well and as good as an air ratchet but without the annoying hose.

A REALLY good quality 1/2" impact makes even stubborn bolts a breeze provided you have the air to run it.

A REALLY good set of drill bits($150+). When you need to drill out a broken bolt and need it dead center a good set really helps.

How do remove leaf springs without one?

My welder and compressor are my go to's. Without those, my life would be considerably more difficult.

Must be tiny to fit in your toolbox.

I'd share the picture I took of Immortals toolbox last time I was in Langdon but its not safe for this site. Ill just say it was made of silicone and pink. Why it was in his tool box is anyones guess. Not the sort of "tool" id ever use. I keep a selection of decent pry bars in the bottom drawer. They come in handy especially when working on the Jeep after Ive re-clearanced something that didnt need to be re-clearanced... Also a decent set of TORX bits and reverse TORX sockets comes in handy.
