Title: 35" tires on a yj

just wondering if i put 35" tires on my yj what would it do ? would my diffs hold out or would i break them off-roading.  Has anyone put 35" tires on stock diffs before? please let me know

Mostly likely you will grenade the rear end.  The front will be stronger enough.  33s is really the max for the d35.

Something Wicked (Tim) has 35's on his d35... has it down to 20 minutes trail time to replace an axle shaft........ you might wanna upgrade before you become a pro like that  :D

To safely run 35s on a D35 yuo would have to upgrade to 30 spline axles and probably get a truss made for the housing, still no that cheap though.  You can get a ford 8.8 for a few hundred from a wrecker and then do the install yourself for pretty cheap.

As for 33s on a D35, if you like the skinny pedal then bring spare shafts

What is involved in installing an 8.8???  I think that is the way I would like to go   :lol:

Do some search, there are lots of good sites out there.  Basically, cut and reweld spring perches and shock mounts, then some mods to the brake lines and emergency brake cables.  There are kits out there to help out as well

Well I am gonna start doing some research so I can tackle it over the winter maybe.  What would I get a ford 8.8 out of???

i pulled a complete ford 8.8 out a 95 exploder at pick and pull last monday  that is going into a XJ... complete with 3.73 gears, trac lok, and disk brake setup minus the rotors...... along with all the hoses and e-brake cables.... all for the price of $89.99 including a $12 core charge....  just regular visits to the wreckers and you will find and gem.

http://www.jedi.com/obiwan/jeep/ford88.html is a page on and 8.8 install in a yj.  this page also contains on some necessary mods to due the axles to correct their weakness.

http://www.mountainoffroad.com/ sells the conversion kits for xj,yj and tj to run these axles.

What about the front?  Is it strong enough for 35's?  Just have to switch the gears to match the 8.8???

The front is stronger enough for 35s and a locker.  However, it would be prudent to get the shafts with the larger 297x u-joints (TJs, later XJs & YJs) vs the smaller 260x u-joints which were in most YJs and earlier XJs
