Title: Steering wheel lock
Post by: rossb on October 09, 2006, 04:55:27 PM
I have an 02 jeep TJ that I sometimes tow.  When I tow it, the steering wheel needs to be unlocked so...I have to turn the ignition on.  Once you turn the ignition on...well you can start the jeep with any key.  You can detach the jeep in about 1 minute ... and it would be very easy to just take off with.  I was wondering if anybody has removed the locking mechanism, and how hard that would be to do?  With that removed I would not have to leave the ignition turned on.

Thanks...

Is your ignition key grey or black? If it's grey, it has the Sentry immobilizer system and all you have to do is get a generic steel key cut.

An un-programmed key will allow you to unlock the doors and steering column but will only let the vehicle run for about 2 seconds.

If you don't have the Sentry key, get a lock for the tow-bar mechanism or just remove the fuel or starter relay from the fuse block in the engine compartment.

Good call vinman.
another thing you can do is, go to princess auto and get their battery terminal lock.  It removes all power to the vehicle when the key piece is removed.  only power to memory (ie. computer/radio) is allowed  to pass.

I have the grey key, and that would work..thanks.

I expect that removing the steering lock would be rather complicated then?
