Title: advise on converting a closed to an open cooling system

My son has a 88xj 4.0l that recently started to over heat, he has replaced the following thermostat,rad,hoses,water pump, coolant pressure bottle and water valve. Should he have converted over to a closed system - what would a disadvantge of doing the swap?

If he has a coolant overflow bottle wouldn't that be considered a closed system?  Not sure if I'm missing something here but I'm not sure what you're asking.
