I have a 1996 cherokee (XJ) and the t-case has the options:
2WD
N
part time HI 4WD
part time LO 4WD
a friend of mine is selling me one from a 1990 XJ limited 1990 ant the t-case has the options:
2WD
Part time HI 4WD
All the time 4WD
N
part time Lo 4WD
should I change it???
if so, what do I need on top of of the T-case???

You will have to swap input shafts. The 90-NP242 case will have a 21 spline input. Your 96-NP231 case will have a 23 spline input. The input from your t-case will not fit the 242 because of a planetary gear cut change in 95. You will have to find a 23 spline input shaft from a 91-94 XJ-YJ or ZJ NP231-242 or 249 that was installed behind a 4.0L (V-8 inputs are longer).
You may also need new driveshafts depending on what configuration you now have.

Also you should grab the shift linkage, gate and bezel. But honestly I wouldn't bother for all that work. I converted mine but it was a direct swap, I had a complete donor rig the same year as my XJ to pilfer from.
You may want the wiring as well if you want the lights on the dash to work, although I think the wiring is different.
