Which Insurance companies cover offroad damages?
Incase its like a rollover or something else major...
Who has experience or actually claimed.
What rules are there? I heard Designated trails only?
Extra for this coverage?
Its not something you want to ask your insurance company i dont think...
no idea

Dava,
My sister works (15 plus years) for an insurance adjuster out east and I asked her that exact question.
Her response is that unless your policy specifically states they do not cover offroad damages, they cannot refuse payment.
Think about it, if your vehicle is parked in your driveway and a tree falls on it , is it covered? Of course it is.
Now, are for as the motor vehicle act is concerned, whats the difference if your in the middle of the bush or in you driveway? Technically they're both "offroad"
She also said most insurance companies will initially try and weasel their way out of coverage, but when pressed, they cannot refuse.

The only loophole is that they will cover you for a stock vehicle UNLESS you have certified appraisal for the modifications. Some insurance companies say you just need receipts and pics, get it in WRITING no matter what they 'SAY'.

WRITING no matter what they 'SAY'.
Yep, my company asked for photo's and a description of modifications. And then I read the policy when it came in the mail. There is no real addendum in the policy to deal specifically with OffRoad. But the terms, "vehicle in motion" and "vehicle not in motion" tend to take precedence over use of the Alberta Highway Traffic Act.

Actually, I can't remember. It was with my old YJ, and the company didn't say anything about a change in rates/premiums.

our current insurance company for the liberty and safari gave me the shaft on the TJ, said it was a restricted vehicle or some carp and that they had to submit my application for approval. I waited over a week past the 2 days they said they needed. 3 or 4 months later still no response.
went to another and just listed all the changes to the vehicle as well as submitted pictures. ended up about $100-$150/year more than if canadian direct insured me but i didn't care. broker only seemed interested in what is on the vehicle, never a mention of where and how I drive it. (except if i was driving to work and back).
i never considered claiming anything on the trails though. worth a thought I suppose.

I was just thinking for major damages.

Even the "major" damages are not worth claiming... unless of course one was in a serious bind in which case one may want to re-evaluate their decisions. That said, single vehicle accidents are rarely worth claiming. When I wrecked my Jeep many moons ago now it cost $5,000 to repair it. If I had claimed it my increased insurance premiums would have costed me $12,000 over 5 years just to get my insurance back to the point it was at when I wrecked. Maybe things have changed since the government regulated insurance rates but a claim is a claim and it still effects your premiums no matter if the accident occured on or off the road.
4x4'n is a hobby and should be treated as one. If I break a bike or snowboard I expect to have to pay for it and the same goes for a breakage on the trail.
This wasn't directed towards anyone in particular but I've heard of alot of people on other boards relying on insurance after wrecking their vehicle while living pay cheque to pay cheque because they simply couldn't afford the repairs on their daily driver.

Go to www.tdcanadatrust.com for an insurance quote, There is a section of the online quote request that asks for the vehicle value, and it specifically states to include the value of any modifications. It does not ask what the mods are, just the total value of the vehicle with mods.

Yes. My jeep is appraised at $52,000.00
Sticker price out the door was $28,600.00
But i have 5 vehicles and my house with the same company so i pay very little.
