Title: Bnine helps
Post by: Spinalguy on January 15, 2007, 10:16:29 AM
Thanks Bill for doing the 5.13 gears and CTM's. The jeep is flawless with your install. No noises what so ever. What a difference!
i have said many times that 4.11 gears and 37's are ok, and i still believe that BUT   5.13's are so much better. i got 5th gear back and 4th gear accelerates. My rig is fast again.
The CTM's should help out as well.
Thanks again. Good seeing you there Dom.

We'll be back in 500kms to change the fluids and do all the brakes. The brakes need done but i am happy that 37,000 kms with 37's on her lasted this long. i am a light braker :D

Tom :)

It was nice to see you too Tom.

Bill has done a great job with my gears also. Flawless...indeed.

I will let you know where to find the Teflon grease for your CTM shortly.

Cheers

With 35's my speedo was reading about 15% fast.
Superlift's Truspeed unit fixed that, it's out by about .5 Km/h now.

On a similar topic, whats the proper break in protocol?  A friend just got some gears and lockers installed in his rig.  So to keep this on topic as a Jeep topic.  If one had Warn Hubs and got new gears and lockers, what would be the proper break in to make sure that the front was turning as well?  Do you:

a) Drive it in 2wd
b) Lock er into 4hi
c) engage your transfercase into 4hi, but not dial in your hubs.
d) dial in your hubs, but keep it in 2hi
e) some other option

Also what is the correct length of time/speed required?

Thanks, and congrats Tom on the the gearing.  I'm sure you'll love it.

You want to heat them up and let them cool down on there own for at least 2 cycles.

Then run them until around 500k and redo the fluids to remove any break in material.

I dont know if just engaging the t-case will work them hard enough. I'd say hit the highway for a quick 10-20k with everything in so they have some load on them. Get them nice and hot, then let them cool on their own. Repeat that once or twice more.

Thats one of the more cautious ways to do it.

Also, if you dont live an hour from work, the commute for the first week or so should accomplish the same thing.

Didn't know you did gears Bill. Since I now know I have a question or two. I recently had my gears on my Tacoma swapped. During the break in procedure (I did everything that everyone told me) the truck never went over 50 mph and I only locked it in on dirt, didn't wheel it at all, just locked it in on a dirt road to get some run time on the front end. Well at about 135 MILES the front end took a dump. Ultimate cause was deemed to be the outer pinion bearing. They said I broke them in improperly although I followed Rany's Ring and Pinion break in procedure the letter. They said that if it was bad setup both bearings would have gone. Any input good buddy? Thanks. Sorry for the hijack Tom, but you seemed done with this thread and I didn't want to start a new one about a Toyota on a Jeep board although I am in the market again. P.S. went from 410's tp 4.88's and everything was new, bearings, seals, gears, and what not.

Improper prelaod, possibly to tight at set up, to loose would effect both I think, but not positive.

Defective bearing

Improperly seated race

spun a race

Damaged bearing prior to install

Re used original race

Brass or other punch material left behind

no prelube for the bearing

low oil level

Thats a few of things I know can effect that bearing. Imposoble to say exactly what it is. All just possibilities.

My guess would be preload related either due to torque setting or bearing seating. Or a bad/damaged bearing. Still, those are just best guesses.

I can't believe you were running 37s and 4.10s, that must have been brutal on the highway
