Something I thought I'd share with the group

If you have a newer jeep and have tried to get a replacement for one of those grey coloured key, then you probably know just how much those keys can cost ya at the dealership. The other day I was browsing around ebay and came across a guy selling blank chipped keys for dodge/chrysler vehicles. I've added a link to the sellers auctions below. At first I figured yeah right, how much is the dealership going to charge to cut and program the replacement. Then I discovered an interesting fact. If you have 2 chipped ignition keys that already work for your vehicle, you can program a third yourself without having to go to the dealership. Now I'm interested.

Well I decided to bite and get one myself, figuring I'd rather spend $20 now and have a third key, than spend over $100 later to replace a lost one. Key came in the mail pretty quick, I took it to Canadian tire and they cut it for free. Next I used the included instructions to program the new key in the jeeps ignition and voila, a replacement key that works great.

The cool part is that the key I ordered comes in the shape of a boulder instead of the regular oval.

PS. He also sells keys for GM, Ford, Lincoln... etc.

Great find, needed one for my Z28, only $10.00 instead of $85 at the dealer! 8)

What are the instructions like? Do you need two chipped keys, or can you do it with one?

if you have the two origional chipped keys that came with your chrysler/dodge/jeep then the owner can program new keys him/herself.

the instructions are in your owners manual. :)

The Customer Learn programming method procedures are as follows:

1.   Cut the blank key(s) to match your current valid keys.

2.   Insert one of the two valid Sentry Keys into the ignition switch and turn the ignition switch to the ON position. After the ignition switch has been in the ON position for longer than three seconds , but no more than fifteen seconds , cycle the ignition switch back to the OFF position.

3.   Remove the first key and insert the second valid key and turn the ignition switch back to the ON position. After about ten seconds the SKIS indicator in the instrument cluster will start to flash and a single audible chime tone will sound to indicate that the system has entered the Customer Learn programming mode.
(The second valid Sentry Key must be inserted in the lock cylinder within fifteen seconds of removing the first valid key)

4.   Within sixty seconds of entering the Customer Learn programming mode, turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, replace the valid Sentry Key with a blank Sentry Key transponder, and turn the ignition switch back to the ON position. After about ten seconds, a single audible chime tone will sound and the SKIS indicator will stop flashing, stay on solid for three seconds and then turn OFF to indicate that the blank Sentry Key has been successfully programmed.

The SKIS will immediately exit the Customer Learn programming mode and the vehicle may now be started using the newly programmed valid Sentry Key

did you have to pay any duty when you ordered the key?  Just curius because every time I order something from the US I end up paying something..lol

Didn't pay any duty for my order. It only came in a medium sized envelope so it was delivered right to my house with no duty charges.

If it gets Shipped USPS (United States Postal Service) you at most will pay GST on declared value...if it gets Shipped with UPS or FedEX you ALLWAYS end up payin something....

I always try to get things shipped USPS as quite often there's no extra charges at all.  With UPS there is ALWAYS extra fees... and on something thats $30 or so you can count on almost doubling the cost just on fees.  UPS is the debbil!!!
