Title: 89 Jeep Cherokee Cuts out when driving AND now won't start!
Post by: JustinGTP on February 09, 2007, 09:15:48 PM
Hey guys

My 89 Jeep Cherokee, which is new to me by 3 weeks or so, will cut out when driving. This has happened twice now and now it just won't start.

1. When driving at any RPMS, the "Check Antilock" light comes on then "Seatbelt" indicator, radio light dims, heater blows less and dash lights dims.

2. RPMS slowly die, then complete loss of engine.

3. Engine DID used to start about 20 mins or so later.

4. Now nothing.

Could it be alternator related? The battery is brand new. This is frustrating, why would it just die slowly and then cut out when I am driving it?

Thanks guys, muchly appreciated. It is -18 degrees celsius out, maybe this is contributing to the problem.

I am just outside of Calgary on Highway one to the West if anyone would like to come and take a look at this with me it would be greatly appreciated! I am broke right now after just buying it and UGH!

Thanks!

-Justin.

was your battery charging while you drove?  Sounds like an alternator to me.

Yeah when I hooked up my Grand Prix to the Jeep a couple days ago it would start and run and when I took off the booster cables it died almost immediately. It was the alternator and I switched it out and now it works perfect! Also I had put in a new battery like 3 days ago as well.

It works now!
