Title: Leaky YJ oil pan
Post by: jtmtetat on February 26, 2007, 03:50:12 PM
I recently replaced the oil pan gasket set on my 89 YJ as I noticed it was leaking.  I took care in cleaning everything before re-assembling and I also used the Black Ultra gasket sealer.  Everything seemed fine at first but now it seems to be leaking again.  I have checked everything (main seal, valve cover, etc...) and it appears to be the oilpan.  Any thoughts from the forum are appreciated.

The YJ's are notorious for the two-piece rear-main seal leaking. Even though it "looks" to be the oil pan.

Otherwise, check your bolt torque, and mark where the leak is coming from, and make sure you scrape off all the junk where the pan meets the block. Both surfaces should be super clean. A gasket scraper or similar device will scrape off the goop, then try again?

Took me three tries to get my old YJ's oil pan to seal. Don't feel bad!

Thanks - I picked up a new gasket tonight.  Hopefully 2nd times a charm and not 3rd.
