Title: What is the largest tire that d30 & d35 setup can handle
Post by: 4PLAYZJ on March 08, 2007, 09:44:57 AM
In the middle of my zj build.  Engine is going in today and a good portion of my custom lift has been ordered.  I would like to know what the largest tires are that I can run on my stock axles (D30 & D35).  I will have lots of room because we are going up 8.5".  I would change the axles at the same time but my toy fund is starting to run low, so I will be stuck with the stock axles for a few years, or until they break.  Any input would be great because building jeeps is a new thing to me (used to be a chevy guy  )

There is no answer to this question, but here are some facts and it is ALL based on the skinny pedal

D30
1.  The D30 is stronger than the D35, especially if it is HP
2.  If you have chomos and stronger u-joints I have seen guys run 36 TSLs with ARB on a D30
3.  The d30 can easily handle 35s

D35
1.  I have seen people break a D35 will 31s and an open diff
2.  I wheel with a guy that runs 35" MTRs, with 4.56s and an ARB on a D35 and has not broken an axle
3.  People say not to put a locker in due to the added stress, however I believe different.  Instantaneous torsional stress is what breaks axles, usually.  With a locker there is a greater continous stress added to the shaft, but there is less chance for a high instantaneous stress since the axles are locked.
4.  D35 axle tubes are prone to bending, which leads to broken axles.
5.  I have heard the super 35 kits are good, but then make the R&P the weak spot.
6.  I ran my D35 with 33 SSRs and an ARB for a season with no problem, but I am a finese driver and I realized what I had and did not push my luck.
7.  Based on this info, 33s are generally the limit for the D35 if you are not hard on the skinny pedal.  If you are either carry spares (both shafts) and learn how to change them or replace the axle

I ran 31s and a rear locker in my XJ with the D35/30 combo for about 3 years, first year of that it was still a DD. Only problem I had was I went thru a LOT of front bearing/hub units and at $150 each it got cheap to upgrade.

I broke both axles in a dana 35 with 35" tires,  4.56 gears and a Detroit, however, the breakage had nothing to do with the rotation of the axles. My breakage was caused by flexing axle tubes.

If you're going to consider using a D35 I highly recommend a truss.

If your planning to go bigger then 33's,I'd consider a swap in the rear.My buddy ruined a few axle shafts, then bent the axle tubes with 35's.The truss and super 35 kit may help though.

The only truss I have seen for the D35 was a bolt on one that had a built-in diff cover and looked like a real PITA to change the oil.  You could very easily get one custom made for probably fairly cheap

I can't even count the number of 35's i have seen come threw the shop absolutely exploded, I blew mine up on 31's but that was due to abuse and neglect.... That truss you guys are talking about is made by Superior and is not worth the investment, it doesnt address the main problem of your weak ring and pinion....Don't go bigger than 33's

So far i havent blown up my dana 30 on 37's with arb...knock on wood

anybody can make a truss, weld a plate standing up across the top of your diff, the truss is just there to help stop the axle tubes from bending.

"anybody"?

I don't have a welder...
I'm just not sure if my hot glue gun beads will hold up to the abuse.... LOL

Hey Scott

Just because your new avatar represents you as a godlike deity does not mean you  can jump the line Scott. Bill is popular. Get in line! Jesus, who do you think you are.     It’s not like your jeep has seen any trails in the last 3months.

It’s Friday, I am a sarcastic jerk for the fun of it. Just felt like giving you a hard time.
