I am not sure where the 4cyl t-case is coming from, but all TJ and YJ 4 cyl t-case should be interchangeable, except for maybe the ones behind the 2.4L.

i had a 4cyl t case given to me and mine got stolen off my jeep mine has a 4.0 l in it so i dont know ?

Well putting a 4 cyl t-case into a 4L driveline is a different story. The 4L t-cases have 23 spline input and the 4 cyl have a 21 spline input gear. The rest of the case is the same, but the input gear need to be swapped

How does one steal a t-case ?

I have a 4 Cyl T-Case in my 4.2L 6 Cyl YJ.
If your 87-90 6 cyl YJ has the BA10/5 transmission then it has a 21 spline output the same as any TJ/YJ/XJ 4 Cyl. NP231, a direct bolt in!
If you are so inclined you can also swap your input shaft into a 4 cyl T-case easily.
