Title: How to install a child seat in a pre 2000 TJ
Post by: RckyMtnTJ on May 08, 2007, 11:36:54 AM
Has anybody here installed a seat in a pre 2000 TJ?  One dealer here in Lethbridge refuses to put a seat in a "convertible".  The other dealership ordered the "Tether" for a 2000 as that was all that was available.  When they went to install it, they said there was reinforcement on the 2000+ TJ and they couldn't install the tether for a forward facing child seat on a pre 2000 TJ.    So essentially my question is has anybody here had a tether child anchor installed by the dealer and how was it done in a pre 2000 TJ.  Otherwise, has anybody had one installed by a liscenced mechanic?   They are supposed to be installed by a liscenced mechanic.  I know its an extremely simple thing, but want it done right and legally.

What are your thoughts??

Thanks,

Jeff N

Even a convertible with a roll bar?

I never did install a seat with a tether in my YJ, but the lap belts worked great and were very secure for the rear-facing infant seat. The YJ did have an anchor installed sideways on the right-rear wheel well. I don't know if that is legal, but it's easier than dropping the tank to put one in the floor.

Maybe go look at a post-2003 TJ as that is when the LATCH system and tethers became standard and mandatory in US law.

The generic tether hook that I used on my CJ came with a very large washer. I drilled through an appropriate location and used the washer to spread the load.

As for installing in a convertible, the dealer probably didn't want the liability. Maybe he knows how you drive

It's your child and you're responsible for their health and welfare. If you're comfortable with them in a car seat in an open Jeep then you are accepting the responsibility/liability.

EDIT - please remember if you don't have a body lift, you might have to drop your gas tank to do this.
