Title: Axles
Post by: Broich on May 28, 2007, 06:51:07 PM: I came across a junkyard w/ about 6 cherokees sitting around w the axles intact. But don't know how to go about figuring out what axles are in them, and what came in the axles. Time is sort-of of the essance.

I've got a TJ w 30/35 combo that could use a future built set of 44s
as well as i just got a 47 willys pickup project truck that could also use a set of 44s down the road.

So is there an easy way to figure out what they are, and are they the same width as the TJ's are. Not worried about the width for truck so much.

Perhaps a link w/ all info available?!

Post by: BlackYJ on May 28, 2007, 08:27:35 PM: Cherokees had 3 axles options, D35, D44, and Chrysler 8.25.

The D44 had a threaded fill plug while the others had rubber. The D44 was only offered back in the late 80s I believe. The 8.25 has a very flat bottom on the housing compared to the D35.

Do a google search and you will find what the different axles look like

We only have dial up on the new acreage, so endlessly searching the internet is very painful and horribly slow.

If i got all the VIN #, can i just look up what they came with on a site somewhere?

Whats the chance of finding axles with posi etc?

8.25 looks like a bigger version of you dana 35

d44 looks like a bigger version of your 35

Its true oval, versus almost square.

Both 8.25 and d35 use c-clips, d44 does not. d44 axles are retained by backing plates out at the wheel bearings.

I think older Cherokees had 27 spline, newer XJs and Libertys have 29.

Post by: Broich on May 29, 2007, 09:29:32 PM: None of them had anything good, but there was also hidden in hte back a 77 Cherokee w/ 360 motor, tcase and axles still intact. Looked like d44 in the rear and a 44 in the front but front one was really offset to the pass side. Any thoughts on what would have come in them back then.

Got the VIN but i think i must be missing a couple of digits:

It's not the nicest city ever but after that money making housing market in Calgary, we were able to purchase 165 acres just outside of town here. No traffic, lots of jobs and land land and more land. The 4x4 mostly consists of real easy trails so trips are a must, but there is lots of mud boggin' and the other trade off was that i can buy all the other toys we wanted for the other seasons as well. I can sled and build all the hits a guy can want on my own land. I'm just in the middle of building a 60 x 35 ft shop now to play in. Oh yeah, and the best part is no neighbours to complain about anything. Closest guy is like 2km away.

So back to the jeeps, I ran by the junk yard the other day, and they had a good mix of cars/trucks/suvs. Said they get a new shipment everyweek. I got to talkin w' the guy and they don't take anything off the vehicles at all for sale themselves. Axles, engine, trannys, tcases- they all get left on. Buddy quote me about 60 bucks an axle for those 44s.
I always thought most of these places all part out the vehicle for anything good on them first before we the public can get our hands on them.

So if anyone is ever looking for something specific, especially small interior parts etc they seem to be readily available, just let me know and i'll keep an eye open when i'm around again.

And you can see all of that 165acres from your back porch! Atleast you always know where the dog is. :P
