I got a 91 YJ 4.0L
I recently went out and sucked in a bunch of water and
ever since the jeep has been burning mad oil. Serves me right for
not snorkeling the jeep. I have done the snorkel and works great,
but now I have to decide what to do with the engine. I keep just
throwing in $8 crappy tire oil every week. I know the the Rings are
more than likely shot and the top end could be damaged.
Any suggestions on what i should do (ie, rebuild it, get it rebuilt, buy a
reman, or buy a used)
Any hints would help.
Thx

stroke it :D
make that puppy a 4.6 L
-
is there any kits out there to stroke it?
Or a shop here in calgary that will do it.
How much am I looking at paying?
-
i thought i read somehwere that the early HO4.0L heads flowed the best and had the best results from porting. i know its a hi-horse power thing but it can't hurt if you have the head off.
most likly you bent a rod and its just letting oil burn right on through. this happened to me old engine. but it ran fine and didnt burn oil... for 2 years. then the #1 rod let go through the side of the block.
start lookin for an engine, or pull your sooner then later. or look into that V8 swap.

you can get stroker kits. search the net

I was actually looking around at stroker kits this week. They range from 1-2 grand US. The two grand kit looks pretty complete, and say to give in the neighborhood of 260 hp and 350 torque.

if your going to go through all that trouble why would you not just throw in a chevy small block?? i plan on dropping a big block into my gmc, so im thinking i will throw the 350 into the jeep. im sure someone here has done it. and i dont imagine it taking much if you can pick up a full doner vechicle. just my .02c

Because 350's are made by Chevy and the 4.0 is made by Jeep. Other than some axles why would anyone run Chevy parts. Plus it'd be cool to have a stroked 4.0.

Plus there is no need to change the wiring when doing a stroked 4L.
Same computer, same sensors. Makes for a much easier upgrade than a non-4L motor.
-
anyone know of a place I can get a rebuilt or used 4.0
and how much is it gonna cost?
-
Craig's List, Ken and Lisa, Ebay, Autozone in the states can get them both from the junkyard and rebuilt, classifieds.
-
i heard some place that because I have a 91 engine
I cannot put a 92-95 engine in. That it must be a 91 jeep
yj engine for a 5spd.
Is this true or can I use any 4.0 from a manual tranny
from 91-95?

Check this page out. It has all sort of info on stroking 4.0L. It also includes a bunch of different parts combinations and the expected horsepower when finished.
-
hey easy on the whole jeep/chevy thing, i kinda like the mix.
i find chevy easier to maintain and cheaper for parts and i get 300plus hp with torque to spare,

not sure why your were told replace with 91 only ... anyone ?
I am not as talented as some (ok many  ) on this site but my suggestion is if you were happy with perf before your misfortune then I would think the most econo solution is to rebuild what you have to stock or find a good same as 91-95 swap ...
if your one of the talented than of course anything goes ...
having said that, if $ is no concern then a v10 viper engine will also fit
-
hmmm a v10 RT jeep, now you got me thinking!!!! but in all honesty i would stick with a rebuild.the I6 4.0 is a very capable motor

druel .... http://www.burnsvilleoffroad.com/MotorSwap/TJ/TJ83L.aspx
interesting it says you only need to swap axles with the viper install , I would think tranny/tc would follow
-
I think throwing a 5.7 hemi or a turbo diesel in a jeep would be awesome!
-
ya I found a couple of 4.0 I6's at Jeep stuff so i will prob give then a call.

Cost
Availability
Weight
Aftermarket
Horsepower
Fuel mileage
Throttle body injection
more then 1 wrecker
More then 2 aftermarket performance outlets. Actually, thousands versus hesco and cliffords....lol
For the record, I like strokers too :D :D :D
But "jeeps dont die, just get chev parts" is an expression that has been around for years because of a few reasons
