how much fluid from bone dry, can a transfer case (NP231) hold? and how full before it blows seals?
i just had an oil change at a minit lube and they "topped up" my transfer case, and now the seals are blown and the tranny is FUBAR'D. i need this level info so i know what info to take to the manager and what compensation my lawyer should demand. can anyone help me with this? oh and if anyone has an ax15 tranny and an np231 tcase kickin around they want to sell...that would help me out too. my number is 403-392-1285. thanks for your help guys!

Hmm not sure how far you are going to get on that one, cann't see how a overfilled t-case would blow a tranny. If the t-case is overfilled it would normally leak out the overflow or the rear output seal.
I believe fill on the NP231 is about 1.5L but you normally just fill it untill it comes out the fill hole.
The tranny has a rear output seal that seals it off from the adapter housing and the t-case has an input seal that seals it off from the adapter housing. The adapter housing is just dead air space. Any oil spilled into that cavity would just leak out the bottom. The two units are quite isloated from each other.

You won't get more than 1.5L in a NP231. Normally I put in between 1.2-1.5L. There is really no way to get more fluid in than the bottom of the fill plug.

isnt there some sort of fill level that you dont go over, so you dont blow seals? i never had ANY issues with my tranny before i went in there, now the seal on the tcase is leakin like a siv and the tranny is screwed. so thats the only chain of events that led to it.

There are a couple things that I would check. First being that they put the right type of fluid in the tranny, ie gear oil and not ATF. Second I would try to look and see if any of the other plugs have been disturbed except for the fill plug. There is at least one I believe that says DO NOT REMOVE.

If filled at the proper plug it is almost impossible to overfill either the tranfer case or the transmission. Lots of ax-15s and np-231s at Pick-N-Pull.

atf can be used in some of these manual transmissions. including the ax-15. i would be sure to drain all the old gear lube first. due to our hard-on-drivtrain type of sport, i use gear lube. and yes, 1.5 liters is abotu right, but very hard to over fill... will make large mess getting more then the fill plug level, lol. same with transmission. maybe they didnt fill the trans with enough?
