So the plan is to gps and document the trail system we have been given by the AURS.
The weekend is June 3-5th.
There will be camping out there, hopefully somewhere close to our trails that we want to document. Hunter Valley trail is one of them.
So, this 'event' is open to CJA members and non-members alike.
Come out and help us document and gps the trails!
Well, for Saturday and Sunday, the plan is to meet at the gravel pit at 10am. (Can someone tell me where the 'gravel pit' is?
(Though, based on this map (http://www.aurs.org/images/maps/map-waiparous.jpg), and the close proximity to our trails, would it not be better to meet at the Fallen Timber Staging Area?) Since one of our trails is the East Leg of Hunter Valley Trail.
For Friday, I guess we could coordinate here, and figure out where to meet, what time, where to camp etc. I have the day off, so I wouldnt mind heading out, finding a camp, maybe doing a quick day run as well.
Anyone care to join me for friday night? Otherwise I'll seeyas at Smitty's in Cochrane for 8am.
Also, there is rain being forcast for thursday & friday, so I would assume that it might also rain on the weekend.
So, if its raining, we would have to make a judgement call whether to wheel and do our trail runs, or sit in camp, stay dry, and keep the insides wet with liquids!
Cheers
Chris

Sounds great Chris. Count me in.
-
I'll be there with Henry too.... 8)
-
right on... eagerly awaiting more info.
I am camping out there near the ridge of the S.Ghost that weekend. Will need directions to the trailhead/staging area.
It'll be my first run with you guys. Looking forward to it if I can make it.
Cheers.

I was wondering if we could get more details. There are a couple people that would like to come down from E-Town that want to camp. Also are the people just going out for the day(s) just going to meet at Smitty's and if so what time?
Thanks

May I suggest Smitty's at 8 leave at 9 sharp on saturday. same on sunday if required,
That should get us to the gravel pit by 10.
Gravel Pit N 51 deg 22.582 minutes
W 114 deg 59.875 minutes
go west from cochrane on Hwy 1a
go north on hwy 40 (940) If you drive past the gas plant on the south side of the road, you have gone to far.
keep going north, the pavement turns to gravel, keep going North you will drive over a cattle gate then you will see a unloading station on the left and a cadet camp on the right, keep going north. You will pass a couple of small campgrounds on your right. The speed limit will drop to 50 kph??
Look for a large open area on your right (east) that is the gravel pit.
If you understand these instructions, you will probably get to lead the mapping group
It is about 45 minutes from cochrane
"Can someone tell me where the 'gravel pit' is? "
Chris, did you really not know this? it is just south of the airstrip. Where you drive across the river to get onto meadow creek trail.

Chris, did you really not know this? it is just south of the airstrip. Where you drive across the river to get onto meadow creek trail.
I have only been past the airstrip once, and that was returning from New Years Eve Carnage Trip '04. The day I almost wrote off three jeeps! Including my own! So needless to say, I needed to change my shorts, pants, socks, pull the pucker marks off the seat, and lend a hand to Brink and SwampSinger as well. So I was not paying attention to "Oh, that looks like a gravel pit". I did notice the Airstrip though.
I kinda thought it was out by the airstrip (afterall, they had to build it somehow). But I wasnt sure.
Anyhoo, now I know!
That sounds like a plan, leave Smitty's by 9am, be at the pit for 10!

I'm in if its cool. Gravel pit @ 10am. Hopefully I'll have a CB by then. If not I will just yell really really loud. ;)
Has anyone else heard of the specific trail closures in Waiporous area? Recent grizzly attack has closed some trails. Hopefully this will not affect the run.
Cheers!

I wouldnt mind coming out if someone has a spare seat but i would probably just be dead weaight since i dont have GPS or maping skills
-
Anyone heading out friday during the day? I have the day off, so I wanted to head out, maybe setup camp, and do a quick scouting trip or a quick run.
Any takers?
Cheers
Chris

Pat and I won't be able to come this time, as we are on holidays before the baby comes:)
Have fun everyone
-
OK, since no-one has said they are out camping friday night, I am gonna do some errands on friday. I'll seeyas out at Smitty's for 8am on saturday. I'll have my camping gear, in case folks are planning on staying out overnight.
Seeyas on sat!
-
How will i know if you guys are going to be at smitty's on sunday?
I want to come but can only come Sunday
-
Because there will be Jeeps in the parking lot. We will be meeting for breakfast at 8 am
-
It is all coming together
The trails we are mapping are nuisance creek, hunter valley trail, and Harold creek. If you know these trails fairly well, please make yourself known to Chris, Bob Or myself (Ian) either tonight or in person tomorrow. We need help to determine which trails are best for which jeeps, I believe Harold creek will not be too hard for the more stock jeeps, but I do not know about the other two.

Ian, are you guys meeting at Smittys in the mornin? If so just post here and I will stop by and give you some stuff. If you dont see me there I will try and meet you guys at the gravel pit at 10. I will be driving a dark silver Dakota, I am sure you will remember me
-
Yes I will be at smitty,s at 8, this maybe too late it is 7 now
-
Anybody back yet??
How did it go??
Is anybody going to be out there on Sunday??
I'm itching to try out my gps :D

We had three teams mapping.
Do to getting rather stuck, our team just finished the first section, it appears that the second and third teams combined and mapped harold creek when they finished up there first sections
I am guessing they managed to get all of the trails we needed mapped. I am not sure about Sunday. It was starting to get a little muddy on saturday by the end of the day and is raining again in Cochrane.
The rest of the group was still on the trail when our group left Waiparous, we talked to them on the CB, it sounded like they were very close to being out..
I would imagine they will trickle back into the city at about 11, then there will be a deciscion made about tomorrow.

4 hour winch fest.
nothing broken, nothing lost.
made it back home, its all good!
pics to be posted once I airbrush all the winch lines and tow straps out of the images ;)

Hey Apex did Jessica get any pics of the rut hill. I forgot to take some as I was more worried about keeping at least 3 tires on the ground. If she did, please send them to TJ54
-
I just got home, Nils and I were the last ones to air up and start back.
We got off the trail about quarter to 10.
Now I have some funny noises from my front end, and I need to pull my fan belt and check the pullies. Plus pull all 4 tires off the bead and get em cleaned. And check out my front suspension, she took a few knocks today.
It was an awesome run!
Thanks to all who came out.
Cheers

Hey Chris, did your tires lose thier seats? hope you didn't run into too much trouble. But by the sounds of it... you might have had a harder time than I did.

Hi guys, thanks for all the help on Sat. We accomplished a lot, and will likely do more.
We went through these motions to help provide a starting point for trail maintenance. As I have mentioned in other posts, we are in a delicate position in regards to keeping our trail systems open. These pictures from Saturday as you can appreciate, are areas that require maintenance and are typically the worst part of the trail. We at CJA do not condone irrisponsible trail usage, and therefore will not condone "Mud and Ruts" pictures on our forums, as it implies that is what we are about.
So be forewarned, if posted, they will disappear.
Given all of our desires for future off-roading, I'm sure you will understand the significance of our position.
And thanks again to those who have helped out and who have promised to help down the road. We will all move towards an environment in which we can depend on on the future of our trails.

Very well put Bob. Glad to see that some people can see the vision of what we need to work towards. I just wish others would follow, and hopefully they do. We do not have any more time to waste. Remember people, we are fighting for our future as responsible back country users.
Glad to hear you guys had a good day.

My sidewalls got knocked around some, I had a tire hissing at me from the bead. Some additional air, and all was well, hats off to Nils for his compressor! Running at 10psi with the pretty stock Rubicon rims, leads to potential chipping (which hasnt happened yet) and pushed beads.
Otherwise, on-board air has jumped up a few positions on my wish-list.
I like to run at lower pressures, because the traction is greatly increased. But I hate to slip a bead, or bash the rim.
Beads I can live with, if I have on-board air. Chipped rims I can live with a little less, as that would impede the rim serving its purpose.
And quite frankly, beadlocks are handy and cool, but to only have one side of the rim proctected seems kinda half-butted to me.
And I don't have a printing press for money, so two piece rims are but a lottery win away.
Ah well, j.e.e.p.
If it aint a hobby, it's gotta be a mental illness.

Best Bob (Featherfoot) quote ever!
I'm also interested to hear what took Scott 4.5 hours to go down one hill!
They must have dismantled the Jeeps and carried them down.
Used without permission, from an email. :D :D :D
That quote had me laughing for quite some time!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Cheers
Chris

Well now that you exposed me on the dismantel theory, we may as well go all the way.
He thought he had gotten away with the perfect deception, but on Sunday he had a horrifying discovery in the carwash.
The fenders of his black YJ..??
... one red...and one yellow...
Dow! ...Darn mud!

Well, I'll step up to the plate on that one. Me being a relative rookie, i found myself hugging the wrong side of a 3ft rut and wishing I had the rear locker. After seeing Scott's front end dissapear into a nasty dip, arse anchored via winch, and staring at his diff like his YJ was mooning me... well.. i got chicken. The going down wasn't so hard as the going up backward, that's where the time went. That plus a small shovel and a small hatchet = slow work.
You live you learn... needless to say, i learned a lot on saturday.
THank again to scott and ian.
Greg
PS. next time I think I will dismantle, might be faster.

I disagree. Sure, its been raining, there's lots of mud, ruts and mud holes. We were out doing some work for our trails, yes it was muddy. Thats the reality of what it was like. Trying to hide the fact by not allowing pictures of mud and ruts is deceptive, are you not honest? Can you stand up and face reality/truth? I say let people post mud pictures, its part of what we do and its part of the environment. Again, censorship of this nature is wrong.

Where have you been the last 6 months Tom?
The SRD is threatning to close down some 90% of the trail systems!
There are a surprising number of back country users, several of whom probably use our forums, who are not aware of that.
The issue is not censorship, it is about changing attitudes.
If we as a community don't clean up our act, there will be a lot of cheap hardware on the street. It's not a cute high school debating topic any more. It's serious.
If you feel compelled to express yourself with mud, go spin a few U-ies on the legislative grounds.
I'm sure your machine can do it. Your choice. Just be prepared to live with the consequences.
But don't drag the rest of us down with you.

Sorry Dave, I did some editing on personal references. (Bob)
I have tried talking with you about this before, obviously nothing sunk in.
You have kids, right Tom? Think about thier future. Would you like them to enjoy the same thing you do right now.
Wake up and quit thinking this is all about you. Look at the bigger picture. Can you see it?

WTF Davey, Tom has a right to his opinions. Not everyone has to think the same way as you.

Ya, not everyone has to agree with me. But we had better start getting on the right page about what is about to happen. I have talked with Tom about this before and his additude sucks.
I am not about to stand by and watch some people and thier shi**y additudes screw this up for the rest of us.
Suck it up Tom, dont post your pics for a while, what can it hurt? Why cant people understand this?
Here is my phone number if you dont like what I have to say, 605-9116

OK guys, I know this isnt the best medium for this, but here goes.
The CJA exec has not solidified their position on pics in the forum.
The technical ramifications are either: Pics, or no pics *AT ALL*.
The gallery is also on hold.
Now, coming down to "What constitues a mud pic?"
Mud is inevitable, rain falls, makes dirt wet, creates mud, creates washout rutting, creates fun obstacles, creates mud!
Therefore, rather than saying "lets use discretion when posting pics" is not working. One persons mud fun, is another persons mud uproar.
I am sure we can appreciate a cool pic, of a jeep flexed out, tacking a washout rut.
To the uninitiated and uninformed, it looks like destruction!
So here at the CJA, because we are a family friendly site (unlike some others); we do get visitors from all over the world. We (as a whole group) have to come together to combat the negative perceptions out there.
I post my pics someplace else. I have provided a link, all you have to do is look for it. Its quite obvious where it is.
If you have pics, put them someplace else. And you can then pm around the link, or put it your profile.
Also, come on people, there is no need for personal attacks and name calling here.
Lets maintain some integrity and professionalism.
