Title: So the impound lot called me today...
Post by: redbull on August 17, 2007, 10:39:30 PM
And they asked me if I own a 1991 YJ that is in their impound lot. Hmmm... I sold that Jeep a few months ago.

Why did they call me? Is this possible if the new owner didn't register it? I know the guy drove it.

Ouch.

Saw this on 4wheeler.ca a few months ago, where a guy had his unregistered truck impounded, and they came after the owner....who after a while finally outed the guy on the forum.

I'll see if I can pick up the thread for you....

Edit: damm, that was quick....here you go.

Thanks guys. I was wondering what could happen. The woman on the phone took my word that the Jeep was no longer mine. I'm hoping that's the end of it.

IMO, if it gets to the impound without being registered, it should be forfeited back to the original owner, unless it's within the same day or something like that.

Thanks, I think I will call you.

Turns out the guy I sold it to has sold it, and then it's been sold twice again since! Never registered by any of them.

Update: (Remember, this vehicle is already 3 owners away from me.)

Met with the guy I sold it to who signed another bill of sale no problem - stand up guy. So, I'm in the clear.

Get this: The lot wouldn't even let me see the Jeep, because I told them I wasn't the owner over the phone, but they can still hold me liable for the fees, because I'm the last registered owner. Nice catch22 there.

I finally tracked down the current owner, who still knew nothing but that it had been towed. The previous (to him) owner had called him, but gave him some bad info that it had to stay in impound for a month. I gave him the file number and phone number of the impound lot, as well as the bad news that the fees were up to $500. Who has a vehicle towed and doesn't even call the police or city to find out what to do? Goes to auction on Saturday, so he'd better act quick.

Moral of the story, keep your bill of sale and don't tell the lot people too much when you call them!

Not sure, but when you sell a vehicle can you not go to motor vehicles and cancell your registration and plate and have them put into their files as SOLD? You just show them the bill of sale?

I had this happen years ago and told them I sold that truck 2 years ago and never heard back from them.

I'm going to find out about that now.

Oh, turns out the Jeep did go to auction. Sold for $3000. I can't believe the guy couldn't come up with $500.
