puzzled by the sudden appetite for oil ... any idea's ?
4.2L block with about 180,000K with 4L HO rebuilt head with about 50,000K and MPI ... no leaks ...
usually use about 1L oil between changes (3000km), used 2.5L this time ?
checked compression and dry they are all between 120psi to 130psi , plugs look fine with gray ends - no deposits ...
-
could be your rear main - the oil is just collecting on the tranny
-
not a drop leaks anywhere on this jeep ... wouldnt it just seep out where the bell housing meets block ...
what ever's gone wrong it happened quick not gradual , the tail pipe is black/soot like and feels a little greasy ... and a light smell of eng oil in the air so its burning it ...
I dont think its economical for me to buy the stuff todo a leak down test, anyone recommend someone in the N.W. who could do ... the compression test only verifies the rings and I think the leakdown can pinpoint something in the top end (int/ex etc) ....

Try checking the air box to see if has oil in it,could be lots of blowby just a thought.
-
Checking the airbox is a good idea. The CV valve at the back of the valve cover can plug very suddenly forcing oil thru the front hose onto the air filter.
-
ok thanks all , I will check my ccv , I knew a plugged pcv valve could do this as its mechanical and could stick but when I converted to mpi I noticed the ccv was just a hole (oriface) in the hard plastic and figured it would never clog... let me check that asap ...
-
ccv device and tube etc all clear ... even put some air in the fitting on intake and it escapes out throttle body ... noblockage ...
-
it may be a longshot but possibly the valve guides are leaking oil into the cylinders. pull the intake and you shoul see a lot of crud all over the intake/exhaust valves.
good luck:)

short of pulling the head will take it apart this weekend, picking up some valve stem seals from NAPA and plan to replace them while in there unless I find something obvious ....
thanks ...
-
NAPA had trouble getting the stem seals by friday so went with mopar , did them on the weekend, at least 3 appeared to be leaking inside , the ones I pulled seemed like a cheap design with just a metal band around rubber whereas the mopar design has a metal lower case and a tiny spring tensioner at the top ...
so cranked it up this evening and first thing I notice is no stench of burning oil, took it for a short drive and no stink coming in the back window so think I got it  ...
true test will be pulling the dip stick after the first tank thru but things are looking good ...
