97 tj 4 banger 5 spd
The clutch slave cylinder is leaking. It's the external kind, I took it off, I'm 100% sure it's leaking.
The haynes manual says it is not servicable and the whole master/slave assembly has to be changed.
Is that right :?: or is there a way to change just the slave :?:
will I have to go to the dealer for parts or will the local NAPA have it. :?:

It is possible to replace just one of the components, however you will never get all of the air bled out and have a 100% nice feeling clutch again. Best to get the whole unit. Napa didn't have them when I was looking a year ago, however have heard they have them now. Someone said that the dealer is still the cheaper option (it happens occasionally).

Thanks.I'm ok with it not being 100% if i can save a few bucks. I'll check out Napa and the dealer tomorrow.
I just bought a tps from the dealer it was about $80. NAPA wanted more than twice as much. so I always check both for pricing. "cause every once in a while you get a surprise :lol:

Not on the newer external slave models. They are in fact not servicable as there is not a proper bleed screw.
Ian, you have to go to the dealer and when I replaced mine it was about $200. It sucks about the cost but it took about as long to install as an oil changed. It comes filled with fluid already to go

Thanks Scott, I was looking for the bleed screw. I couldn't find it. Now I feel a little better :lol:

My 94 YJ(255,000 km) has an external slave , that one was replaced two years ago , got it at Auto Value $60 , had it running in minutes. The same vehicle...... replaced the clutch master cylinder last year with a plastic ( same as stock ) part , it lasted less than a year . The plastic master cylinders have been upgraded to aluminum , that's what is in it now , $135 at auto value , btw, .... Auto value warrantied the plastic cylinder , I had to pay a difference of $5.
My 88 YJ used to have an internal slave cylinder , last year I built my stroker and converted to external slave while I was re-powering it / converting to fuel injection. The slave cylinder came from ........... Auto value , the line , I made up , bleeding it ? piece of cake.
Oh , I should mention , the 30+ years as a motor vehicle technician helps, from time to time .......... even Waaaayyyy before there was internet.

My master cylinder went in July on my 02 TJ, it cost me 355 from the dealership (entire unit).

Thanks for everyone's advice.
After searching around for a while. I found an aftermarket Slave cylinder. NAPA did not have one, but they did list a Master Cylinder but it did not come with the slave. Canadian tire had nothing, I assumed the dealer would only have the complete assy.
Town and Country In Cochrane (Auto Parts Plus ) had one listed and got in for me in a couple of hours.
For reference it is
Part # SC130548 By "Wagner Brake Products" which is distributed by "Federal Mogul" Cost was $95
It was easy to replace, about 1/2 hour, all I need was a 14mm wrench to detatch it from the clutch housing. A small nail and hammer to remove and re-install the pin that attaches the hydraulic fluid line and some brake fluid. Instructions on bleeding it are included.
I went for a short drive, the clutch feels just like new.
