Title: JK, who's got one?
Post by: cjsteve on September 16, 2007, 08:45:09 PM
I went looking the other day, man they look nice.  My wife and I are looking to move our grand cherokee along, and move into a new JK.  I haven't had time to test drive anything yet, was wondering if anyone has one, do you like it?  Driving impressions?  Heard they were a bit gutless.

I was so very close to getting one, At the last second, I went with the 2006 just because the TJ has been proven for many years now, and for parts availability.

The JK Rubicon (4:10 gears) with the 6 speed tranny pulls along good enough (for a Jeep).
Numerically lower gears, with the auto tranny feels sluggish. I wouldn't want to own one in a few years once the engine and other parts start to wear and lose some performance.

I find they don't feel or drive like what a jeep should (wide and long), and they have to many electronic features for my liking, but that 4 door almost had me sucked in..LOL
I really do like the look of those.
I'd still like to get a  4 door Rubicon, maybe the 2010 model if they are still making the at that time.

I just got one in July. It's a dark green Sahara 2-door 6-spd... worlds better than the old TJ Sport 5-spd. I've still got the TJ, so I've driven them back to back a lot over the past couple months.

I'm not an off-road guy, so I'm comparing them strictly by on-road performance. Th JK is so much more civilized and sure-footed in all situations; cornering, braking (the rear discs make a huge difference) and at highway speeds it feels almost like an SUV. The power delivery, while not breathtaking, is much smoother.

One gripe I had about the old TJ was it's lack off passing grunt on the highway. The JK seems to have semi-solved this, as it's gearing seems more suited to faster driving. I am also looking foreward to driving it in the snow, since the JK has two key safety features the TJ lacked... ABS and stability control. I'm convinced both of these have already saved my asss from hitting a moose at 120km/h... it was very close, and I don't want to know what would have happend if I was driving the TJ.

I can't tell you how nice it is to have power windows and keyless entry... A/C and cruise are a bonus. Seats are much more comfortable, but the rear head-rests make for terrible blind spots (I removed them).

It's not all fun and games though, one thing about the JK really bothers me. In the old TJ the front passenger seat would slide forward to allow access for rear passengers, but for some strange reason, the JK's does not. This makes for a lot of swearing when you try and climb in the back seat.

Over-all it is a much more civilized vehicle, but if I was taking it off-road on a regular basis, I'm not sure which would be the better Jeep.

Be prepared to wait or pay top dollar for the Rubicon.  We've been told it'll be about a 10 month wait for our orderd Rubicon.  I saw one at Big 4, stopped to ask, sales guy told me he sold it 10 min ago.  I wonder if anyone is getting into bidding wars on the Rubicons on the lots.

Some guys working at Toledo told me that the wait will be less for Canadian orders, so not sure how much less than 10 months, but we'll take anything less than a 10 month wait.  So we're looking at a Spring delivery.

Yea, I found a couple in Red Deer. We're still not sure what to do.  My wife took one for a test drive, and it had a bad wind noise on the hi-way.  That kind of turned her off.  And not sure if we want another grand.  holy crap are they expensive now

I can see it now... two JK's stop on the side of the road. They unroll their windows and one driver pops his head out.
'Pardon me, but do you have any Grey Poupon?'

Best vehicle I have ever bought.... and that said after only 3 weeks of owning one.  Be prepared to wait for the Rubi... (if your picky) I ordered mine back in November and just got it in mid February.   Supposedly that was fast.... funny how you have to factory order to get LESS options...

Went into Courtesy back in March and lost the deal on 6spd Rubicon so went to Eastside and got the last one in the city according to the dealer. I was told if I ordered one I would be waiting 8-10 months. Been on a few difficult for stock trails and is impressed with it's performance. A little long for it's height but thats fixable. I've done a few long trips to Sask. with it and loved the ride and there is minimal noise for a jeep.

Have a JK and they are amazing.  The ESP is great in the winter and although I haven't had it in the mud yet it looks like it should be able to handle its own offroad.

You dealer is right 8-10months... I went to Eastside and they ticked me off.  I found they didn't treat me seriously.  Anyway, I'm not gonna rant....

...I got a question for you... I'll be doing the Sask Trip a lot myself.  Do you get a lot of wind noise from your hard top panels?  Just wondering if that is normal or is mine not sealing well???

If you guys were to check the vendors section on the site you would see that I am a good guy to come see about any Jeep stuff or otherwise.  I'm the Fleet Manager here at Courtesy.  If there is a way to pull any strings trying get what you want I'll do what I can to find them ;D.

OOPs :-[  Where did you admin guys put the 'vendors'? :o

Sorry dood... I was considering Courtesy Chrysler too - but it's just way too far away from where I live.  I dislike Crowfoot Dodge (like 5 minutes from my place)-they treated me badly too (I thought).  Varsity was the next closest.

But I have been to courtesy and I like you guys too... so if Varsity screws me around I'll be checkin out your service department next...

a very good question, I'll look into that

In the mean time, the CJA does agree, Rob is a good trustworthy guy and will stand behind the product he sells. Even though he drives a Kia :o still don't understand that one ;D

Thanks Ian for the kudos ;)  The 'KJ' happens to be in Lemon-aid Jays shop being outfitted with bumpers, rockrails & skid plates.  Looking forward to showing you guys how it turns out ;D.

Now if you can help with the 'vendors' section that'd be cool 8).

BTW everyone, I might as well let ya know now that if anyone is in need of OEM parts they can contact me & I'll set you up with my parts guys.  If you don't wanna contact me first just go up to the parts counter & mention an association to me(Rob McNeil) or CJA & get 15% off :o.

Mine was a little noisy but better than I expected. But then again I'm used to driving heeps with no stereo so I've learned to tune out everything else.
