Title: Jeep automatic transmissions
Post by: mrbeggins on October 11, 2007, 02:37:47 PM
Can anyone tell me if the automatic transmissions that are hooked up to late 80's and early 90's 4.0l and 4.0l HO's are any good. Also, what is the number of the tranny. Any particular one to stay away from? Putting a 4.0l HO in an 87' YJ and am thinking of putting in an auto instead of a manual.

Yes they are good...AW4 auto tranny. Stay far away from the 42R and 42RE that came in the Grands. They are problematic. Get one from a 91 and newer XJ and you'll be fine. You'll have to do a little work to get it to mate up, but it is do-able.
