Good Day all. i am stroking my 4.0 and would like some tips and hints or things people have found i do understand that i need a crankshaft from a 258 as well as connecting rods.
then i can upgrade the camshaft as well? any tips on that and perhaps places i could find prices.
Im looking todo a 100% rebuild. i want to pre buy my parts and then get the rest done professionally? would any one know where one of the better places in red deer would be to get that done? i also want to try and find a New cleaner/heavyer duty wireing harness.

I've considered doing a stroker build as well. I've been in touch with a company in Ontario that builds strokers ($3000 + shipping) and have questioned them about buying a rebuild kit from them. they refuse to sell a rebuild kit, citing lots of problems with quench and pre-ignition. A fellow I used to know back in NS built two strokers. He's an ex-Chrysler tech who now owns his own off-road shop. The first motor ran great. The second blew to pieces in 20 minutes. Another guy I used to know in NS, Bill Ansell (tech guy for Pirate 4x4 now) seemed to have some problems combating pre-ignition on his stroker as well. Building a 4.0 stroker seems to be pretty tricky work. For me, I'm dying to try it, but I don't know if I have the ability to pull it off yet.
What I've wondered about doing instead is doing a 4.0 rebuild, but having the reciprocating assembly balanced, and the head ported and polished ($700 at Temple of Torque, or do it yourself) upgrading to a newer factory intake manifold

Check out the first build done by the author of this site. He ended up making 240HP and 280lb-ft of torque. I think that's comparable to a stock TBI Chev 350, maybe better. That's what I'll be shooting for, and it will be enough for me when the time comes (probably next year).
If you got the know-how and the coin, GO FOR IT! But it looks like you can make some pretty decent HP and Torque without as much money or problems.

thank you all for the input. i have shyed away from the stroker due to funds though. not including parts at a local shop in red deer, id be looking roughly $2500, no inlcuding pre-bought parts, the same shop will sell me a rebuilt 4.0 for $2280 so im thinking ill buy the replacement, and save this for a stroker or something at a later time. its a $400 core charge

heh been there done that. well talked to eric. they send there engines to lee brothers. and thats who i called. but thanks. i am gonna be getting Rocky mountain Off Road todo some work for me once i am ready for it. need to install 4:10's and new lockers. since its posi rear and open front.
