hey guys, what would you do for the front and the rear or the Jeep ? air lockers or lock right lockers? i have been told a lot about both but I haven't heard any off roadin storeys about them what do you think is trial rated?
-
I have run both, I would run selectable lockers (air, electric or OX) if money is not an issue...plain and simple, you can't beat them.
Lockrights are somewhat harsh on road. The rear will lock up around corners causing tire chirp and premature wear. The front is virtually invisible on road in 2wd, but you will not be able to drive in the winter in 4wd, as your Jeep will only want to go stright. Very dangerous.
Selectable lockers are best becuse you can turn them off and on when you want. On the trail...full time lockers can be a pain for turning around in tight spots (which happens alot).
If you are adimate about Lockrights, I would recommend going with a Powertrax no slip locker in the rear and a Detriot truetrac (limited slip) in the front.

I'll second that. I've got ARB's in the back and front of mine, and they give you the best of both worlds: they are invisible on the road, and give unbeatable traction off road. I had a detroit in the back of my LJ, and it didn't like to turn on slippery streets.

thanks every one the choice is clear now air lockers are the way to go. see you on the trails :P
-
Air is the way to go. Just be for warned that you are looking at apporiametly 4 grand for the air, versus 800 for the lockrites.
Truetracs are nice, but unless you find a used one, they are so close to the price of an ARB, you might as well just go ARB.
Detroit raised all there pricing last year.

ARB's would be the best choice.
If your budget allows them.
Lunchbox lockers work well too though and are do it your self lower budget way to go.
Being fully locked when crawling over icy/muddy off camber sections can be very tricky . having the choice to unlock your axles so that you are anchored by one wheel on each axle would be a great advantage.

Need to ask a question, didnt want to start a new thread.
I in the process of purchasing a powertrax lockright locker for the rear turdy-5. I have the original gears in the axles (3.72 i think?), anyways, I plan on re-gearing to 4.88. Is this going to render the locker useless when the gears are switched? Just want to make sure there is no surprises down the road b4 paper switches hands.

there is a case spread, at 373 and lower you use the stock case. and 4.10 and higher you use a different case. if you plane to go to a 4.88 gear the nyou 'll have to change case, which im assuming you'll have to change lockers. you may want to get a full detoit right off the bat and save the hassle of getting the other case. id say it would be a little more pricey in the end. but then you have a detroit. and your dana35 will blow up around the detroit;)
can anyone else confirm this?

I have a detroit tru trac in my rear diff. works great except when one tire comes off the ground.
I just receieved an Eaton E-locker for my front d30 fromt the gear center (just released them in december for the 30's), works like the arb's except its electric instead of air.

The carrier break for the 35 is 3.54 and numerically higher so 3.73's and 4.88 will fit the same carrier
The carrier break for the 30 front is 3.54 and numerically lower and 3.73 and numerically higher
so Tribal if you have 3.73 your set

rookie is right on the money! even if you had 3.07s, both cases use the same spider gears and thats all that a lockright replaces, so you'd be good to go either way!

I would never go with any but selectable lockers. I LOVE my ARBs, but Bnine is right, they are not cheap, and count on about $2000/axle for the ARB and install.
I ran an ARB in my D35 for 3 years will no problems. I found that I did not have to spin my tires nearly as much as open. Most of the time axle breakage happens when you are spinning your tires and you get traction

You guys I wish I could afford ARB right now. I wish I could afford 37" rubber under an 8" coil over. I wish I could afford brand new danatrac 60 axles.... Right now and until I get a better financial situation (on parental leave, so I can afford bits and peices but nothing big), I gotta go the cheaper route. lockright, 33's, 3" B L, winch from costco! ::) :(
In a year or two I will turn around and throw on the big meaty artillery & replace the cheap stuff.
Anyway, yea I think I am running 3.07s the stock gearing, so I wont need a bigger carrier with 4.88? or will I? gettin confused here... :o
Thanks for your advice.

If you are runing the 3:07 you will likely need a newer Carrier when you regear. Thats my understanding.

Right on, thanks Blair.
