Hey everyone
I just joined cause i love the Jeeping community and have a 98 sport.
I have done a lot of research and still cant find the problem, i am not one of those people who join to take your knowledge and not give back.so if you ever need help just let me know.
If i start my jeep after its only been running for 5 min or so and turn it off and try to start it again it wont start.its happened maybe 10 times since ive bought in 8 months ago.it doesnt even sound like its engaging.the e brake light will be the only thing to come on. I will wait
sometimes for 2 min other times for 1 hr before i can start it again.im stumped.
the worse part is i have to wait for it to happen to probe and i cant find anything.
WHAT IVE DONE
first i noticed their was a lot of oil on my starter so thought maybe i cooked the solenoid.got a new starter.
3 days later i moved it turn it off wouldnt start. verified all the wires were getting power with a v-meter
everything looked good.same thing but now it died and wouldnt start.again probe everything and my ignition switch seem to be the problem.replace that(electrical) starts up fine.1 week later it dies as i moved it to the underground parking. hasnt done it in a 1 week but i dont know what else to do.
Jeep told me to check all the connections - i did- all wires going to the ignition switch to the starter to the batt -i did-batt is good and alternator is strong. thought maybe a defective starter (over heating) got another and nada!
its making me want to sell it cause im so frustrated
could i have a short in one of the wires causing it to do this?
if anyone can help please please let me know.

somthing wrong with the fuel injectors? I know just a few days ago my jeep wouldnt start, and the carb was sticking, so maybe somthing similar with fuel injection? plugs? i dunno just a guess.

plugs wires and dist cap all new in last month

automatic? park neutral switch?

fiend has a point. a buddy of mine just bought a well used cherokee with auto and he has to push on the tranny shifter to start it. neutral safety im thinkin.

Sorry cann't see how the injectors would prevent the starter from engaging.
Good call on the N safety swt though. If its an automatic and it does it again try shifting it into N then start. If it goes then its most likely the N safety swt.
If its a 5spd do you have to push the clutch in to start it? If so maybe the clutch safty swt is out of adjustment or defective.
Barring those it could also be the starter solenoid.

What about the ignition switch? heavy keychains can wear the contacts out causing it not to start. Just a guess :)

the heavy key chain problem was almost a guarantee on older gm vehicles. or any vehicle with a gm steering column. like jeeps from 1995 and older;) but yeah, good call as well, keep the keys light.

can the n. safety switch do that?
i tore this thing apart over the weekend.
there is no bulb for the check eng light! so i put one in and it comes on.
i then grab the 0db scanner and it comes up with a p code and guess what its for!?
N S S, however, i cant start it in neutral. im told this part is $700.00 new.im not spending that!
some of the guys i was tt said it couldnt cause that to happen but i know you guys know so
replace it? can i get a used one?
its Auto as well....

my NSS is done has been for over a year sumtimes it starts in park sum times only in neutral sumtimes it wont start.(but not often)
A new switch puke like 5oo with the cja dicount at steelership.
Im gonna swap in 5sp here soon and it will cost less than a new switch

I have heard of people eliminating the switch alltogether, not sure on the procedure but I know you have to know the operation of the switch(normally open or normally closed).

Normally I wouldn't advise defeating a safety device like an NSS but for $700 I'd be tempted! I don't think its that simple though as the AW4 is computer controled and that device has a LOT of wires coming out on it. Does more than just the neutral safety start.
I'd check around on the web and at some wreckers before hacking the wiring....

Yea if its 700 Id suggest hitting up the junkyard and getting a couple there for cheap...chances are they will work fine.

have fun not breaking one at pick and pull. even ken at jeep stuff cant salvege them most of the time. my 87 xj is bypassed but i cant figger how my uncle did it. its been like that for years no problem. i think this happen to me twice on my 91 auto, not shifting into 4th or stuck in 3rd. but my nss is not working right. might be the culprit.
im planing to go to a 5sp soon. more rliable and a bit better for 3.54 gears, but probly not much.
ps i aint buying a new nss :D

also i posted links before, they are $120 or so to buy online.
i remember once in my old chrysler, i didn't put the shifter all the way into park. wouldn't start, thought battery or starter. got a boost, nothing. used a screw driver on my solonoid and fired right up... except it also started moving. 4000kg car with a 383 and a nissan micra parked 3 feet behind. was pretty close to destruction.

the new issue of JP magazine has the complete run down on how to repair the neutral safety switch thinger on your aw4. seems pretty easy.

I've had this happen in Ford, Chev and Jeep vehicles. I have gotten to the point I just pull a wire from the solenoid and a hot wire into the cab and attach it to a push button to start. Turn on the key and push button to start. Just like the old days - the driver is responsible to make sure the vehicle is in park or neutral.

since i wrote this post ive had no issues , go figure.
im looking into a lift for my trcuk as well so if anyone has something used or cant use
ill buy!
