My new 4 link suspension is making my exhaust routing somewhat challenging. After talking with the shop that is going to do my exhaust we were thinking of just dumping the exhaust right after the skid plate and not going over top of the rear axle.
Has anyone done this? Is this going to cause me any issues with water crossings or with exhaust getting into the cab?
Thanks
Robin

i thought of that before. might stink like exhaust more though...
-
yea, stink ... plus it's too loud without a tailpipe.
can't do a crossover the center area of the diff and exit out the opposite side (drivers side instead of passenger side).
-
Guy at the exhaust shop is worried I'll crush the tubing with the upper arms when flexed out so he was suggesting I go with a down turn just infront of the rear axle.
I did a search through a bunch of diff forums and couldn't find a good pic of how exhaust could be routed with a 4 link rear suspension.

Have you talked to company like Clayton or Poly about this issue

I'll be curious to see what he comes up with. My Cherry Bomb stop right after the skid plate as well and it's freaking loud. It sounds good on the trail, but sounds horrible on the road.

Hey Joel does your exhaust exit out the back or just down turn after the cherry bomb?
Haven't talked to Poly or Clayton... I know the exhaust can be done... just was trying to find a photo to give the guy some ideas of what has been done by others.

Just down turns right after it clears the TC Skid. It's actually not a cherry bomb, it just looks like one (smallest one I could find).
I'm pretty sure I can tone down the noise if someone can find a way for me to run an exhaust pipe further back.

Any issues with fumes/smell? or just a noise thing?
-
I haven't noticed it, but then again my cab is not fully inclosed so there's always fresh air. I'm pretty sure there's a small amount of exhaust fume that probably seeps into the cab.
Let's just say, I wouldn't run it this way if it were my daily driver.

check out this tj's setup , it looks stock routed to t/c skid but from there they plum it up high just offset to
passenger side of rear diff, a (what looks like ) a weird bent and out the stock location ...
I believe the cat is still intact and your guess is as good as mine on the small muffler setup overtop the d/shaft ?

That's kind of different looking. I think I ran across some photos of a very similar setup... It looks like the pipe bends just after the Tcase skid and runs over towards the parking brake bracket.... then back over to the side of the gas tank. I guess that's how they avoid the upper arms.
One thing that's a bit different on my setup is the mounting point for the front arms interferes with the stock bend after the exhaust crosses in front of the engine. It has to be tucked up tighter towards the oilpan.
For now I just went with the down turn like Joel has but I figure I can rig up a pipe like the one in that article if I find the down turn is too noisy or fumey.

I had one ending after the skid plate, tip just before the rear axle. Tip was turned down to keep heat off the gas tank and to keep sound waves off the floor. Having a cat it turned out to be still too hot for the tank and too loud overall. Sounded nice at slow speeds but rather useless compared to a well designed exhaust. Exiting out the side might be better for both noise and heat but I think I'd still like to try it before comitting to something like that.

im pretty certain fabtech has an exhaust piece you install when you run their long arm kits on the tj. maybe ask the tech's at national who have installed these kits.

not to hijake the thread but i have my exhast just ending at my muffler right behind the tcase skid plate and i have a hard top on and i use my jeep as a daily driver for the last few years and i have had no smell of exhaust gases in the cab i have had this setup for about 16 months and not one wiff of exhaust gases.
