Title: tip on KnN filters
Post by: yjcanibul on July 17, 2008, 06:55:09 PM
seen alot of people complaining or worried about dirt getting past their open air filter,  KnN has something called a precharger that you slip over filter to fight against excessive dust/dirt conditions ... seems like a great idea ...

I sized mine up on KnN site and ordered from mopac , it fits like a glove  ...

kills your engine anyways

more air flow=more dirt enter

it only restricts airflow 2% which seems pretty reasonable ...

because the filter is oiled a mud cake on it appears to dry and draw the oil out of the filter,  it makes sense keeping it off the oiled element as much as possible is a good thing ... like a splash guard ...

I think we all agree an open filter on a 4x has its drawbacks so why not add a little insurance if your bent on running one ...

speaking of airflow, there is an article on 4wheeler about a 4L stroker they built, they make a comment the stock throttle body lets in over 400+ cfm of air and they were able to measure the stroker only needed about 370cfm ... some details were missing but it kinda suggests replacing the throttle body is useless ... I will post the link if anyones interested ...

these things work ... been down a few splash trails now and though it looks
like the rest of underhood the filter inside is still pretty clean ... just check
it from time to time for proper lube  ...

apparently they dont have one available for mine. I got a cone that is "illegal" to run on emissions controlled vehicles. The "offroad & racing" filter.

Reasons to NOT run a K an N filter

http://www.caddyinfo.com/airfilterstudy2.htm (http://www.caddyinfo.com/airfilterstudy2.htm)

not on a jeep but you get the idea

K and N's claim to fame is that drag racers and race car drivers use them what the don't tell you is that they throw them away after they use them for one race

I know of @least 3 4.0L that developed low oil preasure and loud ticks after being "dusted" running K and N filters The only way to flow more air without increasing the surface area of the filter (or forced air induction) is to make the "holes" bigger

Read the links and decide for yourself  8)

in the duromax test the ac delco wins all the tests , their filter is a throwaway at $40 and designed to last 1 year,  the KnN is $60  and reusable but in that 1 year period does need to be serviced a number of times - like 4 times is my guess ...

they threw alot of dirt at these filters,  over 1lbs of dust each - thats alot ... the ac delco did remarkably well holding it but suffered in air flow allowing on average only 33% of the K&N throughput , but I know for sure the K&N would need tobe serviced to hold that much dirt ... on a single oiling it held just under 1/2lbs

at the end though efficiency across 9 filters only varies 3%,  and the K&N flowed 3 times better that the ac delco which they chart but again praise the ac delco cause its holding 1lb of dirt - milage gotta suck at that point ... I agree more flow means more particles just like bigger tires means more drivetrain stress , the air makes a few extra horsepower and I enjoy it,  I have put 50,000 miles on my  K&N and the intake tube is very clean - the only residue if from the crank vent in my case ...

I am not saying K&N is the best in all/any applications, but its a reasonably well performing filter if maintained and in the long run can be cost effective ... the purpose of this post is for those running open air filters including other brands but specifically K&N that you can extend your service interval by putting a cover over it that restricts little airflow and repels mud chunks and splashes from prematuring ending its service interval ...

With the dusty conditions we have here letting more through is a bad thing I have an engine sitting in my garage with less than 60k on it with a spun bearing that started acting up after using a K & N filter

In my opinion using a K&N on the street is fine, off road use the one that blocks the most dust

There is a ac delco filter that fits the tj and when the rebuilt engine go's in mine thats what I will run 3-4 filters a year @ 40 bucks a pop is cheap insurance IMHO

Rebuilding them ain't cheap :'(

I run an Airaid and put on a pre-filter before this month. I pulled the intake at the throttle body and ran my finger inside, there was no dust/dirt. The Airaid appears to be filtering very well.

Most pre-filters are also water resistant, which is another plus. You still cant immerse them of course, but the odd splash is far less dangerous.

wish I could post a pic of my wrap  >:( , you could see the water stains and and dried mud clumps on it
but the filter inside was clean ... without it the K&N becomes really high maintenance as it dries quickly .....

I'll try syntectic once mine dies but that wont be for a few more years ... I'll wrap it too as Z says ...

but I do need more air than stock ,  lying around here and there is info about the stock airbox - it only allows
something like 100cfm (cubic ft minute) of airflow ,  in the following article you'll see a done out 4L head can
consume 200+ cfm ,  I run headers/catback and slightly more displacement than 4L so am somewhere inbetween these two spectrums I would guess ... regardless I do know via feel it runs noticibly better with open filter ...

states 4L stock air filter setup allows 99cfm
http://www.rockcrawler.com/techreports/edge_trailjammer_tj/index.asp

states (near end of article) 4L head flow intake cab be as much as 200cfm
