Title: Please slow down!!
Post by: WhiteOut on August 14, 2008, 11:29:30 PM
First off, this is not directed to specific people but really everyone in Calgary.  A few of you guys know I work construction, mostly doing infrastructure work (roads and bridges).  We understand that everyone has a place to go and wants to be on time, but if you are going through a construction site, please slow down.  It may seem like a hassle but for our work to be done safely it helps if everyone drives the 50km/hour limit that is set.  In places where we work just a few feet from the road (16 Ave North) please try, we had an accident just last night because a couple of drivers were speeding and had to slam on their brakes to stop for our flagman.

Also, HI to all the modded Jeeps I see drive by all day.  Seem more than ever >25 or so today alone.

Not aimed at you in particular either, but road crews in general (including tow truck operators, other emergency services etc.)... this is a shared responsibility... please don't be lazy putting out safety devices.

I write this as an ex tow truck operator and ex EMT.  I can't count how many times I have had to jam on brakes or have had traffic snarled because someone couldn't walk back the proper distance for the road speed (at least 100 metres) and put out a cone or a lane closure sign to give drivers advanced warning.

The one day, a guy was unloading equipment in a 60 KM zone in the inside lane with *ONE* cone about 1 metre from his truck.  People weren't noticing that he was stopped and just about hitting him... he even looked nervous, but didn't even seem to consider putting the cone (or more than one, what a concept) further back.  The truck in front of me did a california lane change at the last second, leaving me doing 60KPH mere feet from his truck.  Luckily, I have good reflexes and brakes and I'm not scared to use them, but I do think the back tires came off the pavement.

That's just one recent example, but it's pretty common.

Anyhoo, like I said, you guys probably aren't in that category and yeah, drivers are pretty "me me me me me" stupidified...   lately, I swear they opened an insane asylum, let everyone out and handed out auto keys at the door.

Let's all work together to not kill peoples dads, moms, husbands, wives etc. that are doing US a SERVICE, K?

The construction workers put up a ton of signs, but dont bother to bring them down when they arent working.
Title: Re: Please slow down!!

I agree and I disagree...

When out in the open, nothing blocking them - Workers are in danger and traffic must abide by the speed limit.

I disagree when there is a large concrete barrier between the workers and traffic... you'd have to be something stupid to hit a construction worker behind the barrier.. and if the construction worker happened to decide to pass the barrier then its up to the construction worker to ensure his own safety (ie.look for traffic before crossing). If after that the construction worker gets hit.. then the driver that hit the worker deserves every form of penalty he/she receives.

I'm sorry if this offends anyone. Just my opinion.
Title: Re: Please slow down!!
Post by: WhiteOut on August 20, 2008, 01:20:39 PM
I do agree that there is an onus on both the construction workers and drivers to look out for one another.  When there is only a set of cones and wooden barricades separating us from traffic it is more dangerous than when we have the concrete barriers set up.  But those concrete barriers are no anchored to the ground, I have seen on several occasions a vehicle hit them and the barrier move.

Matt: what do you mean by not removing the signs when we are not working?  Do you mean not removing them at night if we working the day or vice versa?
Title: Re: Please slow down!!

I think what Matt is getting at is areas where no work is going on, yet signs are still left up. Some crews seem to be good about covering/turning over/laying down their signs when work has finished for the day/week/whatever...but others seem to put them up and leave them up regardless of what is or isn't happening adjacent to the roadway. It is these crews that are careless about the signs that contribute to the problem of motorists not slowing down.

That combined with the ignorance, stupidity, and carelessness of many motorists. I have a very low opinion of the where the lowest common denominator of the driving public rests.

Ban cell phones and any form of communication while driving and than motorists could pay attention to their surroundings >:(

This is so true... I avoid talking on my cell phone in the car unless I have a hands free set.... even then im distracted.. its just safer to put the phones away and focus on driving ...

Yes thats what I meant squared

I see good companies and I see bad companies, see good & bad drivers

I just hate it when I am doing the posted 50 kmh limit in the construction zones and I see these punks blazing past me doing 100 or more, even if they arent working and the signs are up I still obey the law. I would say 75% of people speed threw construction zones. What they should do is quadruple fines and triple demerits, make it real severe for the law breakers. Anything over 50kmh the posted limit is dangerous driving, subject to immediate impound of vehicle.

Hmm.. and with dangerous driving, a criminal offense, the car then gets auctioned under proceeds of crime legislation... but wait, they weren't making any proceeds other than time...

Doubt that will ever happen, but one has to question the ability of people to make critical decisions in other areas of their lives based upon the ones they make behind the wheel.  But then, I have had the dubious honour of seeing the consequences of these decisions many times over the years, both as an EMT and civilian, so I'm pretty umm... opinionated about the subject!

That will one day backfire in your face. You'll be in a rush just a couple ticks over the speed limit and you'll regret ever suggesting such an idea. Cops are not here to be your friend, whether you're a model driver/citizen does NOT matter if you break the law you pay. Maybe you say "i'll never break the law" but trust me somewhere down the road you will be in a hurry to get to work for that important meeting or whatever... and you will speed... and the cops will ticket you... So when you speed through that construction zone by accident and get pulled over and the cop hands you a ticket thats 500 some dollars for only a couple ticks over... and you lose your vehicle... you're really gonna slap yourself for it. I wouldn't say tripling demerits and quadrupling fines will do it.. they will continue to speed and you'll pay the consequences of your ideas because of "accidental speeding" ... No matter what you put in place someone, somewhere will speed.. why set yourself up?

Thats funny.. I don't recall actually saying that I speed in there... wow.. do you need to go back to grade school to learn how to read? I said that will backfire in someones face when they decide to speed just once and i'll find it hilarious cause they brought it on themselves. That does not in any way state that I speed and don't care about safety. Get your facts straight.

They should triple the insurance premium of anyone under 26. The roadways will be much safer.

and only be able to get DL after 4-5  years of having a learners depending on driving record. if you get a speeding ticket you wait another 3-6 months depending on the speed over the limit  you were driving

I think we have it pretty good.
Maintained roads, street signs, speed limits, civilized drivers, enforcement, etc....

Seen alot of other places in the world where the roads are more of a free for all between cars, bikes, wagons, tractors, animals, pedestrians.
Looks like complete chaos.

Title: Re: Please slow down!!
Post by: MB.Muffin on September 09, 2008, 10:45:29 AM
wow.. i have to agree with frenchy that we've got it good
but i also agree that some people should not be on the road (not necessarily speeders - but some of them are just stupid adolescents that THINK they're good and should be revoked of all driving priveledges)

Im sorry to offend anyone here now but honestly you all are RETARDED if you think upping restrictions is gonna put better drivers on the road. It won't. People who are gonna have to wait 6 years to get their DL are gonna just gonna say EFF IT and drive without getting a license or isurance. (AND MATT4X4 this is not me saying i do it!) This is common sense. You'd just be giving someone else a new reason to avoid insurance and a license which in the end could hurt you should they hit you (no license to track a hit and run and no insurance to pay for damages on your vehicle)... something to think about. I'll admit the system has flaws and something should be considered to encourage these new drivers to slow down...Maybe drivers training should become mandatory or something instead of just a reason to get discount for insurance.

Not to mention that by upping the restrictions to discourage speeding is penalizing those who are good drivers.
Title: Re: Please slow down!!
Post by: Tinkerer on September 09, 2008, 09:43:22 PM
I agree with MB that perhaps we should go the way of Europe with mandatory drivers education from *reputable* trainers, regular retests for *all* ages etc.  It's unfortunate that we have to institute "mother" with all the loss of freedoms, expenses etc., rather than people accepting the responsibilities and agreements that come with applying for, receiving an operators license and choosing to climb behind the wheel.

Hmm.. that's kinda off the topic of slowing down when there is a hazard present, whether that be construction, tow trucks, police, ems, fire or just the new mom out changing a tire or putting fuel in her auto.  Some of these are laws, some are just (not so) common sense.

PS: I hate to have to add this part, but some people just don't get it...  To those who will argue that you didn't make any agreements when you got your license (and many have brought up that argument, including one guy at work), do you sign any agreement to pay when you enter a restaurant?  No? Oh, but you pay the restaurant... it's called implied agreements, the same as when the choice is made to climb behind the wheel. You don't sign, but by that choice, you implicitly agree to the laws, rules etc. that apply.  You may note that this then applies to people *without* a license too.  No license doesn't mean you can't get tickets.

Ok, now that I've probably ticked off a ton of people, I'm off to get some sleep and degrouch some.

Wow this is a heated discussion! I spent 4 years working on the Deerfoor for the maintenace contractor. I do understand the driving publics frustration at reduced speeds in construction zones. The reduced speeds are not only for the construction workers safety but also for the driving publics safety. Lots of contstruction zones have speeds set by Alberta transportation to a limit to allow the safest conditions for both worker and public. Temporary cement barriers (Jersey Wall) is only rated at (I think) 80 kmh and water barriers (70) so even at night when the site appears to be emptythe speeds are reduced for everyones safety! I won't touch on the age issue because I have mixed opinions about that. I started driving at a very young age (9) and my kids have done the same.

I'll agree that at night because of reduced vision that a reduced speed is definitely safe. I also agree with reduced speeds being safer for both... but not the fact that he said the Jersey Wall (cement barrier) is rated 80 km/hr (he thinks) ... this is what I mean... If there is a cement barrier  a limit of say 60 with workers present and maybe a 70 or 80 limit when no workers are present (including evenings) ... these are obviously in place for a reason.. this is my issue.. slowing traffic down more than required... We already have enough people on the road who don't know how to keep up with the speed limit.. why add to it?

We already have enough people on the road who don't know how to keep up with the speed limit.. why add to it?

Let me try to say this without inciting a riot...  The speed limit is a maximum limit under ideal conditions, not a suggested speed. Since ideal conditions seldom exist, in the strictest sense, it should be pretty rare to actually get to the speed limit.  Now I live in the "real world", so I accept that people will want to do the speed limit under reasonable conditions. Some have good reasons to travel at less than the speed limit which, up to a point, is perfectly legal.  It is these conditions that are the subject of this thread... construction, emergency vehicles (including tow trucks), even a hazardous situation such as someone changing a tire, stalled car, poor visibility for whatever reason etc.  It astounds me how many people will *accelerate INTO a hazard*... Darwin Awards anyone?   Also note that Jeeps are not inherently designed for driving fast, even less so with the most common modifications (lifts etc.), so that should be taken into account as well.

Be very aware that you can be driving at or under the posted limit and *still* get a speeding ticket under the basic speed law - speed unsafe for conditions. Quite a few people get caught by this one and not just when it is snowy and icy out, though that is the most common.

As one person who is actually trying to get whatever mileage I can get out of my Jeep, I often am operating under the speed limit, so long as I'm not obstructing traffic etc.  At least I'm not doing something illegal... it actually *is* within my rights as an operator to do so (within reason).  I don't do it while hogging a fast lane, merging etc. and often find other people doing the same speed (or less) than me.

I used to always do the speed limit rather religiously if conditions permitted, but since I found I can squeeze an additional 25% out of my tank driving the way I do *and* I get there in pretty much the same amount of time (and often catch up to the light-to-light racers at the next red light), I have changed my driving habits and will continue until either fuel drops drastically or someone else starts paying my fuel bills. (Volunteers??? ;D)

Ah well, I guess I had better put on my asbestos undies and sit back...

so long as I'm not obstructing traffic etc.

This is the reason I said what I said... most people who drive UNDER the speed limit

a) don't know where they're going
b) don't know how to evaluate their surroundings
c) are just plain retarded. (sorry to be offensive)

and all of these things OBSTRUCT traffic. I can understand slowing down for an Icy road, I can understand slowing down for a really rough road (lots of bumps, potholes, etc.) I can understand slowing down for even a wet road, construction zones, emergency vehicles... what I can't understand is why on earth people have to drive 20 km UNDER the speed limit when the road is not congested, no construction zones in view, no ice, no snow, road is dry...

There are factors that can determine slowing down traffic and i'm sorry if this offends anyone but being a SENOIOR CITIZEN or a FOREIGN VISITOR does not count in my opinion.. if you can't keep up with the speed limit because going the speed limit makes your "nervous" then get off the fricken road.

Hesitators and people who aren't paying attention or aren't aware of their surroundings are people who cause the most accidents... speeding can be a factor but not always...

My point is..  i've seen cases and expereinced cases where speeding was never the cause of the accident it was the idiot who made the illegal lane change or right turn... but somehow the person going under the speed limit is pinged with speeding... with no other factors like snow, ice, construction, emerg vehicles, etc... to change or inhibit the conditions.

I'm very aware they exist. And I myself have driven under the speed limit. All i'm saying is its not always the cause or the problem. No one seems to get that.

Wow, so I guess because
a) I know where I'm going (I've lived here all my life)
b) I know how to evaluate my surroundings (been driving both personally and professionally since the mid 70's)
I must be
c) Retarded

Thanks a ton, and I *do* find that offensive and I *did* give you a valid reason.  Further if you are truly sorry, why say it that way in the first place? What about motorhomes? What about Jeeps going up hills? What about people who actually make an *INFORMED* decision to go slower like myself? I actually did explain it, I'm sorry you can't understand it. Kinda arrogant to assume that we're retards.

So far, I don't fit any of those categories. I'm not a senior, I'm definitely not foreign, I *can* keep up, but choose not to, I'm certainly not nervous doing the speed limit and why should I get off the "fricken road", do you OWN it?  Do you have EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS to it?  Are you so important that everyone else should get out of your way or off the road?  Where does this arrogant attitude come from? One day you are going to be a senior and I really want to see YOUR reaction when YOU get told that you shouldn't have the right to drive when you've helped BUILD what exists at that time.  I've paid more road taxes than you, perhaps YOU should get off the "fricken road" eh?

My point is..  i've seen cases and expereinced cases where speeding was never the cause of the accident it was the idiot who made the illegal lane change or right turn... but somehow the person going under the speed limit is pinged with speeding... with no other factors like snow, ice, construction, emerg vehicles, etc... to change or inhibit the conditions.

Now I'm shaking my head because after you very pointedly calling me retarded, you state that speed has very little to do with the accidents in your experiences... it's more poor judgement, something exacerbated by having to make those judgements in increasingly smaller periods of time as speed increases.. WOW.

After driving ambulance for quite a while, I have a different opinion, it is more often the impatient, arrogant "I own the road and everyone else better get out of my way" types who in their rush make those  mistakes you state... not paying due attention or exercising due care, following too closely, unsafe lane changes, cutting people off, blazing out of lights without looking, blazing up to red lights and hoping everything is working 100% by leaving minimum stopping distance and so on and so on. Heck, even on a road with only two of us on it and with two lanes each way, people seem to feel that they need to cut me off coming into the lane I'm in, presumably just because I'm not going the speed limit, now THAT IS ARROGANCE... pretty much trying to cause an accident!

I remember a time when people actually cared about the other people around them, partially because they realized that the person in the next car that should "go away" or "go back to where they came from" might be the one who makes your food, builds your roads, provides your healthcare, built the house you live in, provides the fuel for your vehicle, the clothes you wear, the electricity and natural gas you use and so on and so on pretty much ad infinitum. That's a pretty egocentric (self-centred) attitude.

I'm done... I know from past experience that people won't "get it"... but I won't go back to driving the speed limit and burning MY fuel at MY expense using MY money that *I* worked hard for just so some egocentric arrogant (expletive deleted) can get somewhere 30 seconds to 1 minute faster.

You surprise me MB! Last time you got into about driving, it was on another site, and in the end it turned out that you didn't even have your D.L. yet! And clearly stated on an open forum(driving related, starts with E, has a J in the middle and a C on the end) that it was alright to be driving without it, as you had been doing forevs(<----just to keep with the lingo) like that. Now how long have you had your D.L. (or learners?), a couple of months? Seems like you have all the experience in the world to be making such a case!

whatever. You can't prove crap. and on top of that I have my DL so i have just as much right to say what I want. And this forum is not EJC. EJC was the biggest mistake I made. I may not be a jeep owner on here but I am legally allowed to drive and I can state my opinion as much as I want unless someone asks me otherwise. I am a jeep enthusiast my intentions are no more than to enjoy trails and the company of other fellow jeep lovers. If you all have a problem with that then fine. But nothing I said here was "I break the law, you should too" ... I'm simply stating why I don't agree with the traffic laws today. My points have been proven on a daily basis.. but since none of you drive anything like me nor have you driven WITH me... you have no cause to go saying im a bad driver. There's a first time for everything for everyone. Sorry I've actually DONE some of them. Doesn't make me a bad driver and it doesn't make me a bad person so stop judging people based on things they say.

Smack! That was fun! Not judging you, I was actually trying to show you that maybe you shouldn't be so judgmental, but I guess you didn't see that.

I'm not judgemental. I just don't agree with ALL the road laws.. thats all.  And in my opinion some people really should not drive.

My biggest point is that the flow of traffic needs to be kept up.. And alot of the time someone interrupts that flow inappropriately which in turn can cause accidents.

For Example:
this is not an attempt to start this over again but is it really that difficult for people to know how to merge onto highways? ... I take the highway daily and I always have to stop because the person in front of me either wasn't aware that they needed to get up to 100 or just chose not to... ... that interrupts traffic flow. Probably the biggest interruption too..  I think sometimes it might be helpful to put the definition of "merge" on the sign..

OH AND MY PEANUT IS BIGGER THAN YOURS!  ;D

So is that what the MB stands for? ;D
Just poking fun as it obvious that this thread is getting old and boring! ;)
I apologize for bringing up the EJC crap, and putting you into a corner where you felt I was attacking you. Sometimes typing cannot emphisize mood, and I was not trying to be beligerent. I guess the words I choose, or the manner of which I use them, seem to come off as beligerent.
Kinda like my opening comment today! ;D

Wow, I never expected my post to turn out like this, lol.  If Al or Dom wants to lock/delete it, go ahead.  You could always change the title to "Jeep driving class".

Haha.... the MB could stand for that... much more believeable than MudBoggin LMAO considering im still jeepless *sigh* ...

And I appreciate the apology. EJC is no longer part of my activities. I'm going to keep it that way :) I made some good friends on there that I've kept. Now i'm ready to make more here. I gotta build up a posse before I move down to calgary haha.

I'll agree tho... It never occured to me that I totally opened myself up to that MB=Mindless Banter bit haha... ;)
