CJA THANKS GIVING RUN (Indian Graves Trail)
Date: October 8th
Meeting place: Okotoks Smitys
Meeting Time: 7:00am
Departure Time: 8:00am
All Jeeps need FRONT and Rear tow points, a working CB radio. The trail is not for beginners, winch and lockers are highly recommended
To all that want to join us on this run, be prepared for a long day. The full loop takes about 10 - 12 hours. Bring extra fuel and extra food.[/size]
Hope to see you all there. :D
-
Anyone want a passenger for this run? My rig won't be trailworthy by the weekend. I buy breakfast and gas!
-
Great but what trail are you doing?
-
i have ridden that trail twice since all the floods and big rains.
i think you will be on that trail longer than 12 hours IF :) you have anyone that is not locked front and rear and winchless.
The floods have made some sections extremely difficult with a high white knuckle factor. The skeg field is mostly dry so that should be ok but there are some brutal uphills. Also, the 'posing' section that has the erosion where you are forced to deke between the trees to get around it will see everyone on a winch as the erosion is big and steep.
After you cross the river at the 4 corners, you will soon be in for one incredibly tough climb. Very eroded and off camber. After that it is smooth sailing from the bent tree and beyond.
Maybe i have been on a bike too much but i think that any jeep not locked and winched is not going down that trail. There is one mud section that is tough now as well.
Having said all this i think it is now an even better trail :D .

Hmm.. heres a clue Scott..
Meeting place: Okotoks Smitys
-
Apex, I have an extra seat if you need it and if Nils does not find a seat for his hat.
-
I won't make it because my stupid Comanche is broken again, but is Nills talking about Indian Graves (Okotoks Smittys) and is Tom talking about Waiparous (four corners?) I think this should be clarified for all the people who don't have ESP and are reading this.
-
i am talking about IG and the 4 corners where the emergency exit is located.
Tom :)

 I wish i had some more trial time on the jeep! Dont know if I trust the new engine for 12 hours of beating :? .
How far out of Oka. is IG??

-
So............
How'd the trail turn out guys?
:? :?
-
I wish I could have seen the last half but unfortunatly the trail got the better of my jeep  and still looking for the parts to fix it :!: :!:
-
who all went? Who survived? I'd love to see some pics.
I couldn't make it due to an unbelieveable hangover. Stupid stupid head.
-
started with 8 jeeps, 4 finished
Billie and Spyder went home shortly after Okotoks due to a rear drive shaft. Ya-wanna (Rick) folded a couple of control arms and left the emergency exit with Chad in the Blue YJ.
Nils (tjd60) Dom (swampsinger) Dave (ornamental) Milan (milan) and winch beotch Steve (stickman) continued with the trail and made it to Okotoks Boston Pizza by 12ish for a round of well deserved drinks.
that beatiful trail has obviously never been run in a while due to all the fallen trees in its path. there was nice snow in the higher altitudes and some warm temps in the southern hills. a great day to be out! a great, challenging and scenic trail to be on as well. the "Wall" was a winch obsatcle, just like last year. The great thing was there was no ice under the snow this time on the big hill climbs. the trail didnt seem overly wet to me either.

It was one of the best all around trail I travelled in Alberta!!!! :D :D :D
This trail in the Indian Grave area has a great combo of technical obsticles that would satisfy all tastes. It is seriously not a beginner Jeeper trail. It left me breathless many times .... WOW!!! (as you can see on Dave's pics  ) I've learned lots!!!
Thank you Nils to organize the trip and also a big thank you to the rest of the crew to help me through the day with some of the obsticles.
Great crew, Great day... exceptional trail!!!
This is a trail ride I will not forget!!! 8) :D
Til the next adventure ....

Nice pics.
Nicely done!
Did you guys complete the entire trail?
i would love to see pics of the off camber very eroded hill that is about 2 hills after the creek at the emergency exit (4 corners).
For those of you that took the emergency out, did anyone get a pic of the BIG sign that forbids access? It is not a SRD sign and we need pics of it.
Thanks
Tom :)
-
I took pics of the sign 2 summers ago. Gunther should have it. No pics of the erroded hill. Not even sure if we're talking about the same one (the one before the plane crash?). 2 of us still managed the off-camber, 2 used the bypass.

started with 8 jeeps, 4 finished
Billie and Spyder went home shortly after Okotoks due to a rear drive shaft.
Thats an understatement if I ever read one.
My t-case completely exploded, tearing right off the back of the tranny. Took out my header, both driveshafts, and most likely my tranny output.
DC denied warrenty. Looks like Im out for a while.
-
Milan, it was after the emergency exit and before the crooked tree.
Bill........How come that happenned? Any idea?
Why was warrranty denied on a t-case?
Tom
-
Bill, now I'm really sorry we did not take it out for a spin right at Smitty's. Must have been more than a vibration though, no? Was it the chain or the output shaft or something else? You mentioned chain being good, output shaft being straight, driveshaft being new. What was the cause? Was it the front CV locking up?
Tom, that sounds like it then.
-
Turned to be something internal. Pretty sure a bearing seized up. Denise had a bad shift fork once that mad simlar noises but it didnt explode. Hence I figured I'd be good for at least the weekend until I could get it to the dealer.
Big 4 is going to split it today and see if they can find what failed. If they do, and its obvious it wasnt driveshaft, or mod related, they will try to go back to dc one more time and see if they can change their minds.
I never did a runout test on the output, but I was vibe free before and after my last wheeling trips. The only use she had seen until the failure was 2 weeks of dd'n back and forth to work.
The rear shaft still has my name written on with one of those paint felts from DSI its so new.
If this doesnt go through Im going to put it down and work towards a custom setup.
Im leaning towards a new NV4500 and Atlas combo. Not cheap, but at least I'll be able to forget about it once its all in there.
Nothing like 1 ton drivetrain in a 4000lb jeep :D
-
Hmmmm. It does sound like something siezed up all of a sudden like that. It might not even have anything to do with the vibration.
On the other hand, Atlas is very nice. ;)
-
Turned out my newly rebuilt rear CV didnt have a drop of grease in the ball. It felt solid because it was new, but what happened was it heated up, seized, failed, then tore the t-case apart.
There was less then 2 weeks on that rebuild. Drove it to work for a few days, then as far as we got saturday.
Not to impressed right now thats for sure.
-
Hmmm. Why is the first guess always the right one? Isn't that exactly what we discussed at Smitty's? Only with it being "new", the idea was dismissed. Who would have guessed? I'd take it back to DSI and see what they can do for you in terms of "warranty".
-
Thats the plan. I wasnt going to name names until I find out how they are going to deal with this. My only hope is that come through and do the right thing.
I dont think its regular practice for them to send out dry driveshafts.
