The oilpatch is pretty big. You looking specifically at rigs? Or just want to cash in on the bountiful paycheques of the patch?

Patch also needs fitters, welders, sparky's, instrumentation, insulation, sheetmetal. Just to name a few trades.

Spend the $120(approx), and go get your H2S. Most companies will pay for this, but it will look good if you already have it. From there start handing out your resume. I worked for Nabors Drilling for 2 years, and I had no problems with the company. As per crack heads and what not...its no worse than any other job I have had. Work smart, dont put your fingers anywhere you wouldnt put your dink, look up, and you`ll be fine.

Lots of companies will hire a green guy with tickets.  They have to be busy for a green guy with no tickets or you have to know someone.

im working up in ZAMA city and if anyone knows where that is then u know why they pay 31 starting ..
im closer to north west territories than anything else ..

but yes the  winter is coming and will be getting busy once again . it not winter yet im putting in 110 hours in 7 days .
so its well worth the hours when u see your pay stub

Who are you working with up in Zama, Rubio03jef?

And Sbcheroke:

There should be reasonable propspects this winter for a green guy. Without tickets, you will face a few hurdles. With tickets, I can't see you sitting if you get out there and pimp yourself  ;D

The tickets that you'll want are:

H2S alive (from Enform). One day long, classroom course, $150
Standard First Aid (from Red Cross or St. Johns ambulance). Two days long, classroom course, $150
Petroleum Safety Training (from Enform). Four to six hours long, computer based course, $100

An IRP16 ticket is also equivalent to this last one.

Get your tickets first, put the on your resume, and be prepared with a photocoied sheet showing all three of them so that you can fax it out to employers if they ask to see your tickets before an interview. Bring the originals to the interview.

I'd also reccomend refraining from smoking anything other than tobacco while you're trying to get hired. A lot of places are doing pre-employment drug screening these days. Also note that most drug screenings include a breathalyzer, so if you've been out on a bender, you'll fail.

You have no idea how many people fail this last part.  :o

IF you want to get an idea about what working on a rig is like, go to the preicision drilling website. They have a couple of PDF's there (one each for drilling and service rigs) that explain some of the basics.

ive been with global since june and we've only had a few ds here and there where we were shut down cuz of to much rain but for the most part they try to keep all there rigs working .
i do know for a fact that they are always hiring because they keep buyin more and more rigs but dont have crew for them .

just ask for a fax number and just send your resume .. most likely even if your green they'll give u a call

I wasn't fishing for a job, just curious about yours  ;) I kinda like the gig I have right now.

But you're giving sound advice. If you can hack it in Zama, you can hack it anywhere.

companys you want...
TrailBlazer drilling
Technicoil drilling
Akuna drilling

From my experience they have a good safty guideline of rules and anti drug policy...and ENFORCE it....squirt tests as close as three months i heard...

99% of the companies now require a pee test before starting ..
but that doesnt mean people dont start drugs after they get hired .

from what i have done in the patch so far drilling rigs suck there slow boring and as a green guy the only thing youll be doing is cleaning and even more cleaning . oh and de icing stuff .. oh so fun NOT ..

the drilling rigs are good that you are sure to have 12 hour shifts and they pay 140 tax free sub (living alowence)
so its easy to make some good cash and come home safe to the wife and kids

service rigs are faster pace and as well starting green hand will make 23 bucks starting and your on the rig floor within a week normaly tripping pipe in and out ..

rough necks make even more and yes theres still down time and the crew cleans and what not but there are also days that youll be working 18 straight hours and trust me when u have a few of those in a pay period it is well worth the black and blue eyes .

but then again over working people does cause things to go down hill .. (people getting hurt)
myself with in the first month i broke my hand and got a huge cut on my arm .. still worked no one knew and just covered the cut and wrapped the hand good so i was able to keep going .

so all depends on what it is u want .. theres also pipe line and other oil field related things that can be done for some good cash ..

I've heard that pipeline can be very good money...but it's absilutely a case of feast or famine. Go hard for six months, and then sit for nine.

Rubio3jef is accurate in the differences between drilling and service rigs...although there are some "carrot puller" single and double drilling rigs that run their hands just as hard as a service rig. They don't run leasehands either, so you'll be slinging tongs just as fast as the motorhand can train you (mostly 'cuz he doesn't want to do it)

To be honest with you, trying to describe working on a rig is like trying to describe an elephant to someone who's never seen one. We can talk 'till we're blue in the face, but there's no way to truly understand what it's like until you've done it.

that sums it up right there ..

i asked so many people before i start what it was like and they could talk for hours and i was in aww with a dumb blank stair on my face ..

but good luck with the search

Mobile drilling units?
Title: Re: oil rigs
Post by: Rubi03 jef on April 08, 2009, 08:00:56 PM
mobile ?     most rigs are on skids ( meaning they can be moved by heavy equipment haulers ) or they are mobile as in they have there own drivetrain and wheels   but thats normally on small singles

so what will you be working on

What you're talking about soudns almost like a Frac crew or Coil crew. Different thing altogether from riggin'

Congrats on getting hired on with Schlumberger. I was a FST for a while, and can attest that they are an awesome company to work for! Mind you, I had a fairly cushy job that flew me out to the States every other week. You can "expense" a lot of things like Hockey tickets . You usually get a one ton with leather seats, and live/die by the cellphone. One word of advice is to pronounce the company's name right. Don't say " Schlum-burger" around office types.....it's usually frowned upon!

Have fun guy!
