Post by: Tagg on April 10, 2009, 09:00:37 AM
Need pointers on offroading. wonder what the off road 101 offers. What are the odds of damage? Is it June 13? Please fill me in.

Need pointers on offroading. wonder what the off road 101 offers.

If Waytec arranges it thes same way he did last year (I imagine he will, since it was a BIG success last year!)

-Meet at the McLean Creek store
-Non-members will provide proof that they have insurance and sign club waivers
-Drive to the gravel pit, and then spend the morning rotating through a series of instructional "stations", each with an experience Jeeper to give you pointers.
-Break off into reasonable sized groups to tackle stocker-friendly trails

What are the odds of damage?

If you listen to the experienced folks, quite low. There are never any guarantess when you're off-roading, but I don't think that anyone broke anything last year  8)

Is it June 13?

Yes

Please fill me in.

It's a great time. Coming out to Jeep 101 will get you a foundation of solid skills to let you start tackling trails in a sfe and responsible manner - and let you know what to expect when you're out with the CJA.

Seriously it starts a great foundation for off-roading. But nothing susbstitutes for experience.

I would strongly suggest the Off-Road 101. Also come out to some of the newbie runs. The goal of the 101 is to make you conferrable and safe on the trail.

Don't you need insurance for any off road vehicle (quads/bikes) in Alberta? I know they have to be registered for sure.

That is a crock of shyt... all vehicle needs to be insured.  What happen if you hit someone else on the trail and you kill them?

at least PLPD... really think about it!

All vehicles needs to be insured and all drivers must have a proper driver licence for Offroad 101.

I think last year we require that the vehicle was insured under the driver's name.

Thanks

Also... Tagg... if you decide to take offroading as a hobby, expect to get some scratches on your Jeep or even body damage. I

We cannot promise that it will not happen... you will be in a safe area with people that know what they are doing. We do things a certain way to make sure people are safe.

When you offroad, things can turn sour real quick. One has to make sure they make the right decision so nobody gets hurt and your vehicle does not get damaged.

I do not want to discourage you but you have to know that there is a risk your jeep might get damage. Like there is a risk you get hit by another vehicle on the road. I hope you catch my drift...

Looking forward to meeting you all at Jeep 101

Cheers,

Dom

The owner must be present. Dos not have to driving but must be present.

What about the vehicles that you could potentially hit?
What we are saying is:
Proof of insurance and a valid drivers liscense and you can wheel with us.... otherwise, please stay as far away from us as you can. Everyone has to have their arse covered.

I have a bit of a hard time reading you reply mon ami but please make sure you have insurance for your Jeep if you and your girlfriend want to attend.

There will be no rolling and hitting trees on offroad 101 (at least we are not trying to expose new jeepers to these situations)...  It is for novice Jeepers.

That is our requirement.

Thank you

I'm sure that you can find insurance that is a LOT cheaper than $300/month.  I pay $70/month and I drive it year round.  Like Dona nd Trev said, you need insurance no matter what.  If you hit a fellow Jeeper and mess up their rig and possibly injure them, who is gonna pay?

Why do you have to call me names man!!! ;) Dona?

 ;D

..............................

$300 a month!!!!... Holy crap! What kind of a driving record do you have dude?  I think you might have to read between the lines here. May be you insurance company does not want to insure you. :-[

I pay $58 a month for PLPD and I think it's a rip off. :o

I pay $60 a month on my JK...but I've got pretty comprehensive coverage, and it's an '08.

Agreed. If someone is asking for $300 a month, then you've done somethin to make them NOT want to insure you.

Back on topic here and stepping back from the cost quote. Our point is not about damage to your vehicle but about what happens if you damage someone else’s or hurt someone. Or the newer off road drive behind the wheel does . You should have liability insurance in place.
Title: Re: 101 ride

offroad only insurance for 300/month?   might wanna call again and see if its for a year... or is your driving record horrific?   my YJs 700/year and i hate my insurance company for it........

back on topic; wheeing without insurace/drivers licence is not cool.  irresponsible and dangerous.  call around, find some places to get insurance blah blah blah, nobody ever said wheelin was a cheap sport, so don' t cheap out in the one area that can hurt other people.......

The Jeep 101 is a great place to meet people and learn stuff. I went out in my stock 08 rubi, and maybe got some scraches on the skids plates, but thats what they are for.  If you get to a spot that you seem to have trouble in, there is almost always a way around, but if there isn't, then the other guys, will guide you threw it. You should definitely go, its lots of fun.

Hey everybody...

I've got a 2008 Liberty - bone stock - and am interested in getting into some wheelin with it.

What's this whole story on Wheelin 101?

When is it?  is it actually happening for sure?

Is my stocker Liberty (with stock all season tires) capable?  I don't have the tow hook on the front yet - but plan to install... should this be done before the event?
Title: Re: 101 ride
Post by: fug on April 20, 2009, 09:07:34 AM
The story on offroad 101 is:

- its an event for people who have never wheeled before and are interested in trying it out in a fairly safe and low pressure environment
- It is open to all Jeep vehicles with "offroad capablities" (ie four wheel drive with a low range transfer case) so your Liberty does fit the bill
- It IS happening for sure... on June 13, 2009 at MacLean Creek
- You should definitely get some front tow points installed before the event

All this info and much more can be found in the thread that is sticky at the top of this forum (or click here (http://forum.calgaryjeep.com/index.php?topic=12388.0))

pfff.... thanks fug - apparently I'm blind, because this was the only thread I could see on it.

Will certainly be trying to confince the [soon-to-be] wife to let me rip up the jeep.  I DO want her aware that the Jeep MAY come home with some-sort of damage...  Can anybody who's been let me know what to tell her to expect (damage wise)?
Title: Re: 101 ride
Post by: fug on April 20, 2009, 10:48:41 AM
While there is the possiblity of damage... it's completely possible and even highly likely you won't come home with any.  We put the warning in place so we don't have someone getting PO'd that they got a scratch on their pride and joy.  It's like anything... there is a risk.  You could end up scratching the paint, getting a bit of dent or tearing up a tire (among other things) when you go offroad.

If you go skiing you increase the risk of breaking a bone.... but just learning to ski isn't a guarantee that you WILL break a bone.

Title: Re: 101 ride
Post by: Immortal on April 20, 2009, 10:54:27 AM
Scuffed skidplates... maybe a ding in a rocker panel, or a door, or bumper. Basically like fug said... it depends. Depends on your speed, traction, and your ability to manouver your vehicle.

Super easy trail, though. And we won't put the group in any dangerous situations.

How much is the "normal" donation?
Title: Re: 101 ride
Post by: fug on April 20, 2009, 01:53:44 PM
The donation could be $5  ... or it could $500.  It all depends on what you think the training is worth and what you can afford.   All the funds go into our Trail fund which is then used to help do things like build bridges, fences etc in an effort to maintain the trails we have or open new trails by making them sustainable.
Title: Re: 101 ride
Post by: BrendonR on April 20, 2009, 02:29:12 PM
Well thanks alot Fug/Immortal... (and everyone else at CJA) - I'm definitely going to see if the Fiance's up for this.  She said it could be fun, but I wanna make sure she doesn't get PO'd @ me if the jeep gets a little bruise here or there.

So tow hooks are a must

Skids are "reccomended" I imagine?
Title: Re: 101 ride
Post by: w squared on April 20, 2009, 04:10:20 PM
Skid plates are good, but again, the trail will be specifically selected to be friendly to stockers.

Waytec has the experience to pick a trail that should get allow new drivers in stock vehicles to finish the day with new skills and a new enthusiasm for off-roading.

If you meet the requirements laid out in the sticky, you'll do fine.
Title: Re: 101 ride

I don't have skidplates.... I did it last year, and many more since then.
Title: Re: 101 ride
Post by: LAHAL on April 21, 2009, 05:50:00 PM
Maybe those skid plates I found belong to you.  :P

Last year, we had all kinds of stockers. We had, stock TJ's, stock JK's, stock JK Unlimited's, stock Cherokee's and everyone made it home with minor to no damage at all.

I think all I had was a few scratch's on my door, but you can't see them anymore, as they are camouflaged with the other 100 scratchs on the door.  So when the scratch's start to bug me, I just go threw a giant mud puddle. BAM, scratch's are gone.

OR, it was so nice last year, that you could just take the doors off.

My donation last year was $20 bucks, and I felt like I got my money worth.
