Need pointers on offroading. wonder what the off road 101 offers.
If Waytec arranges it thes same way he did last year (I imagine he will, since it was a BIG success last year!)
-Meet at the McLean Creek store
-Non-members will provide proof that they have insurance and sign club waivers
-Drive to the gravel pit, and then spend the morning rotating through a series of instructional "stations", each with an experience Jeeper to give you pointers.
-Break off into reasonable sized groups to tackle stocker-friendly trails
What are the odds of damage?
If you listen to the experienced folks, quite low. There are never any guarantess when you're off-roading, but I don't think that anyone broke anything last year 8)
Is it June 13?
Yes
Please fill me in.
It's a great time. Coming out to Jeep 101 will get you a foundation of solid skills to let you start tackling trails in a sfe and responsible manner - and let you know what to expect when you're out with the CJA.
-
and ya get to get dirty!!!!!! can't forget that one.
Seriously it starts a great foundation for off-roading. But nothing susbstitutes for experience.
-
my jeep has no insurance as it is just a tril rig can i still come ouit and do the jeep 1o1, to teach my gf stuff so she can learn more on safe offroading,i my self have been ofroad for over 15 yrs every thing from trails to offroad racing.

I would strongly suggest the Off-Road 101. Also come out to some of the newbie runs. The goal of the 101 is to make you conferrable and safe on the trail.
-
Don't you need insurance for any off road vehicle (quads/bikes) in Alberta? I know they have to be registered for sure.
-
Don't you need insurance for any off road vehicle (quads/bikes) in Alberta? I know they have to be registered for sure.
That is a crock of shyt... all vehicle needs to be insured. What happen if you hit someone else on the trail and you kill them?
at least PLPD... really think about it!
All vehicles needs to be insured and all drivers must have a proper driver licence for Offroad 101.
I think last year we require that the vehicle was insured under the driver's name.
Thanks
-
Also... Tagg... if you decide to take offroading as a hobby, expect to get some scratches on your Jeep or even body damage. I
We cannot promise that it will not happen... you will be in a safe area with people that know what they are doing. We do things a certain way to make sure people are safe.
When you offroad, things can turn sour real quick. One has to make sure they make the right decision so nobody gets hurt and your vehicle does not get damaged.
I do not want to discourage you but you have to know that there is a risk your jeep might get damage. Like there is a risk you get hit by another vehicle on the road. I hope you catch my drift...
Looking forward to meeting you all at Jeep 101
Cheers,
Dom

The owner must be present. Dos not have to driving but must be present.
The drive must have valid drivers license.
-
i got ahold my insurance lady my o1 jeep tj will cost me 300 a moth for OHV insurance an i only wheel 2 times a month as for damage ha i'm not worried as i have roled it two times and hit several trees. pound out the dents and keep wheeling
-
What about the vehicles that you could potentially hit?
What we are saying is:
Proof of insurance and a valid drivers liscense and you can wheel with us.... otherwise, please stay as far away from us as you can. Everyone has to have their arse covered.
-
I have a bit of a hard time reading you reply mon ami but please make sure you have insurance for your Jeep if you and your girlfriend want to attend.
There will be no rolling and hitting trees on offroad 101 (at least we are not trying to expose new jeepers to these situations)... It is for novice Jeepers.
That is our requirement.
Thank you

I'm sure that you can find insurance that is a LOT cheaper than $300/month. I pay $70/month and I drive it year round. Like Dona nd Trev said, you need insurance no matter what. If you hit a fellow Jeeper and mess up their rig and possibly injure them, who is gonna pay?
-
Why do you have to call me names man!!! ;) Dona?
;D
..............................
$300 a month!!!!... Holy crap! What kind of a driving record do you have dude? I think you might have to read between the lines here. May be you insurance company does not want to insure you. :-[
I pay $58 a month for PLPD and I think it's a rip off. :o
-
LOL!!!
my trail rig is about $40/ month. My other 3 together are about $50/month. What kinda of record do you have Dona? :)
-
Driving Under the Influence of Bacon. :P
-
Why you guys have to be that way... picking on the fat guy.
D.U.I.B. ...I'm a criminal!!!
-
You gotta understand....this is how Dom sees his computer screen.....

-
I pay $60 a month on my JK...but I've got pretty comprehensive coverage, and it's an '08.
Agreed. If someone is asking for $300 a month, then you've done somethin to make them NOT want to insure you.
-
as for damage ha i'm not worried as i have roled it two times and hit several trees. pound out the dents and keep wheeling
Back on topic here and stepping back from the cost quote. Our point is not about damage to your vehicle but about what happens if you damage someone else’s or hurt someone. Or the newer off road drive behind the wheel does . You should have liability insurance in place.
-
offroad only insurance for 300/month? might wanna call again and see if its for a year... or is your driving record horrific? my YJs 700/year and i hate my insurance company for it........
back on topic; wheeing without insurace/drivers licence is not cool. irresponsible and dangerous. call around, find some places to get insurance blah blah blah, nobody ever said wheelin was a cheap sport, so don' t cheap out in the one area that can hurt other people.......
-
Offroad insurance is no longer being offered to vehicles with actuall "truck" VIN numbers only ATV's can now be registered as OHV only
-
better call and check with your insurance company there Doug, i' pretty sure you can. mine does.........
so you comin to the 101 Douggie?
-
well peter went to register the Big S10 again and they declined it saying because it has a Truck VIN it cannot be registered as an OHV any longer
-
so you comin to the 101 Douggie?
He doesn't own a jeep anymore from what I have heard.
-
aww, to bad doug, that'd have been a good ride for ya....................
-
After Doug gets his liscense?
-
Am looking forward to this. Am hoping I can get out and meet members of the club, also looking to join club. when is next meeting?
-
i may or may not be there ;D
-
The Jeep 101 is a great place to meet people and learn stuff. I went out in my stock 08 rubi, and maybe got some scraches on the skids plates, but thats what they are for. If you get to a spot that you seem to have trouble in, there is almost always a way around, but if there isn't, then the other guys, will guide you threw it. You should definitely go, its lots of fun.
-
i know alot of the CJA guys already used to be one of the best winch b*tches around haha but now ive moved onto my own ride and have been around the wheelin scene since basically day 1
-
ok this might be a dumb question but do you have to have a jeep to attend 101? my buddy has a tracker and would like to come out.
-
Sorry we are limiting it to Jeeps for right now.
-
I thought that was what CJA stood for.... Calgary Jeep Association?
-
maybe she understands other people cause she isn't getting screamed at? LOL!!!! :) :) :) (mine too....)
-
I thought that was what CJA stood for.... Calgary Jeep Association?
No it means... Chut Jyour cAker... your sarcastic bum! ;D
It was a legitimate question. 8)
....
Pat , have Michelle sit with Trevor (Immortal) for a while. He needs to learn a few words of French... ;)
Jokes aside...it would be nice to see you guys on the trail again.
-
thanks guys he will just have to ride with me! silly little tracker! actually it's an asuna sunrunner :D which is the same but soooo not manly!!
-
I know some good ones... ;) Learning more is good too!
-
Hey everybody...
I've got a 2008 Liberty - bone stock - and am interested in getting into some wheelin with it.
What's this whole story on Wheelin 101?
When is it? is it actually happening for sure?
Is my stocker Liberty (with stock all season tires) capable? I don't have the tow hook on the front yet - but plan to install... should this be done before the event?
-
The story on offroad 101 is:
- its an event for people who have never wheeled before and are interested in trying it out in a fairly safe and low pressure environment
- It is open to all Jeep vehicles with "offroad capablities" (ie four wheel drive with a low range transfer case) so your Liberty does fit the bill
- It IS happening for sure... on June 13, 2009 at MacLean Creek
- You should definitely get some front tow points installed before the event
All this info and much more can be found in the thread that is sticky at the top of this forum (or click here (http://forum.calgaryjeep.com/index.php?topic=12388.0))
-
pfff.... thanks fug - apparently I'm blind, because this was the only thread I could see on it.
Will certainly be trying to confince the [soon-to-be] wife to let me rip up the jeep. I DO want her aware that the Jeep MAY come home with some-sort of damage... Can anybody who's been let me know what to tell her to expect (damage wise)?
-
While there is the possiblity of damage... it's completely possible and even highly likely you won't come home with any. We put the warning in place so we don't have someone getting PO'd that they got a scratch on their pride and joy. It's like anything... there is a risk. You could end up scratching the paint, getting a bit of dent or tearing up a tire (among other things) when you go offroad.
If you go skiing you increase the risk of breaking a bone.... but just learning to ski isn't a guarantee that you WILL break a bone.
-
Scuffed skidplates... maybe a ding in a rocker panel, or a door, or bumper. Basically like fug said... it depends. Depends on your speed, traction, and your ability to manouver your vehicle.
Super easy trail, though. And we won't put the group in any dangerous situations.
-
How much is the "normal" donation?
-
The donation could be $5 ... or it could $500. It all depends on what you think the training is worth and what you can afford. All the funds go into our Trail fund which is then used to help do things like build bridges, fences etc in an effort to maintain the trails we have or open new trails by making them sustainable.
-
Well thanks alot Fug/Immortal... (and everyone else at CJA) - I'm definitely going to see if the Fiance's up for this. She said it could be fun, but I wanna make sure she doesn't get PO'd @ me if the jeep gets a little bruise here or there.
So tow hooks are a must
Skids are "reccomended" I imagine?
-
Skid plates are good, but again, the trail will be specifically selected to be friendly to stockers.
Waytec has the experience to pick a trail that should get allow new drivers in stock vehicles to finish the day with new skills and a new enthusiasm for off-roading.
If you meet the requirements laid out in the sticky, you'll do fine.
-
I don't have skidplates.... I did it last year, and many more since then.
-
Maybe those skid plates I found belong to you. :P
Last year, we had all kinds of stockers. We had, stock TJ's, stock JK's, stock JK Unlimited's, stock Cherokee's and everyone made it home with minor to no damage at all.
I think all I had was a few scratch's on my door, but you can't see them anymore, as they are camouflaged with the other 100 scratchs on the door. So when the scratch's start to bug me, I just go threw a giant mud puddle. BAM, scratch's are gone.
OR, it was so nice last year, that you could just take the doors off.
My donation last year was $20 bucks, and I felt like I got my money worth.
-

They don't make skid plates for Bushwackers Trevor.... ;D
-
AAAAARRRRRGHHH!!! I hate them as much as y'all do!! I am awaiting for the go ahead to flatfender the beast!!
-
I'd really like to go, I even have that weekend booked off. But I get the impression my wife is planning a surprise b-day party for me....... I need to figure out a way to make the surprise be the trail run. Any ideas? :-\
-
Just leave early, its your bday. ;D
-
Just do it.... it's your b-day. you should be home around 4ish for cake.
-
4? only if it's black forest cake. I'll tell her I misplaced the mud that's supposed to be in the wheel wells and had to go find it.
-
bring the whole group home.... it's your b-day!!
-
yup, no. I just called her over to read the poster and she shot it down as soon as she saw what it was. :'(
-
Tell her, if you can't go wheelin, then she can't buy shoe's for a year.
And then enjoy the sofa.
-

Well gee. The party is s surprise, which mean she hasn't told you about it, which means that you can't know about it, which means that if you miss it you have a perfectly good reason for her not to be upset, which means that everything will be "fine".
Perfectly logical. Right guys?

Sounds right to me - besides, it's JUST the excuse she needs for you to be out of the house while she sets everything up!
-
tell her your taking the WJ then she'll get all concerned with that and then the concession will be 'fine i'll take the TJ'
and hopefully she's happy with that little victory, all the while you have won in general cause u still get to go!
-
Wow. Lots of advice here on how to surf the couch :o

Stuck it T's driveway? I'm not really picking up what you're putting down but I'm in !! But it can't be Friday night either. I've been given specific instructions I cannot go anywhere or make any plans..... unless of course I'm kidnapped.
-
Dwight...kidnapping you would be easy. You are small and would fit in a Honda Civic trunk.
I will join you for your birthday if there are plans. If not; take me up on that shooting range idea I had (12 guage and cans of cat food)
I'm in for Jeep 101 ride. It sounds fun!
-
Whats your addy? I can get a black van and a few balaclavas. 8)

Immortal knows where it is. Let me know before hand so I can make sure Clyde is in his crate, he is pretty good at intimidating people.

I may be small on the outside but I'm fat on the inside, might bottom out civic springs.
We may have to plan a trip out the weekend before ;D

Wait...what? :o Someone's combining Jeeps and Guns? ;D
I've got an 870 that's been feeling neglected recently if you're looking for company on a cat food expedition! I think I've till got most of a case of #7 that I picked up for cheap at Wholesale too.
