Title: I plan on buying new 33x12.5x15 tires, any suggestions?
Post by: lilskaterpunk on August 24, 2009, 12:41:08 PM
Im trying to figure out what tires I should purchase for my Jeep TJ. Anyone have any suggestions?
Im looking for a rough looking mud tire. I love the sound of the howling lol and the more aggressive, I think its cool. I would prefer to have a tire thats NOT going to just wear out fast. I would use the tires more for summer and looks, park during winter time. Tire size would be 33x12.5x15

Here is my list...

BFG Mud-Terrain T/A® KM2 http://www.bfgoodrichtires.ca/overview/mud-terrain-t-a-km2/3930.html
Toyo Open Country MT http://www.carmodifier.com/default.asp?Action=displayTire&cID=1039&vendorID=105&tireID=50
Dick Cepek CRUSHERS http://www.dickcepek.com/tires.php?item=Crusher
Baja MTZ Radial http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/truck.php?item=BajaMTZRadial

Im going to probably buy these rims for the tires, unless someone else has some suggestions?

Toyo  ;)

X2. Toyo's wear pretty good on a light vehicle such as a Jeep. Mine do :)

TOYO, we had them on the work trucks and they loved the mud and were pretty quiet on the road.

I have the DC-1 Black Rims and I really like them. I have a few little pits on the wheels but I am the only guy that I know that has that problem. Everyone else seems to like those rims and they dont have any problems with the pits like I do.

I also have the Mickey Thompson MTZ's and they are Awesome. They work well in the winter and the little bit of mud I have had them in they work well.

I have the DC-1' s as well.  Love the rims - look great. I do have some nicks and scratches from some trails but that's gonna happen if you wheel.

SSR

Not great in the winter, but I use them. Very good all round Off Road tire is the SSR radial (Super Swamper Radial). A few of us are running them as 33” tires. They come a little oversized. Not all 33” tires are a true 33” some are less than 33” and the SSR is a little more tire.

I have the DC-1 and they are holding up great! I also have a preference for the MTZ as I ran them for 2 years and they perform light years above the BFG. I also hold the Toyo in high regard as I've seen them wheel and driven with them on the street and they handle the winter roads excellent.

Here's a pic of the poseur Jeep I have the rims on ...

MTZ's or the Toyo's. I run MTZ's and they work very well. For the up coming winter the MTZs have great grip on ice. The toyo's are a great tire as well. Not quite as much grip, IMO, but will last a few more clicks. SSRs have gone way up in price and won't last as long on pavement.
 Mickey thompson SideBiters aren't a bad looking rim.

Goelander is decent but he'd have to find old stock somewhere, the new geolandar+ doesn't have many sizes. And from what I remember you get 3 or 4 more 32nds of tread depth with MTZs and the toyo's too I believe

@AMCJeep
Nice pic!

@Tinkerer
I only gave those choices cuz im looking for suggestions. Post some info if u know of other brands and types.... ;)

@Everyone else
Thanks for the replys. I am still debating what I wanna do as buying a set of 5 new rims and tires can sure add up!!! lol Toyos are very nice and so far leaning towards them. As for rims, DC-1 are nice but the cost for everything is going over my budget. I might look into some simple 5 bolt black rims that can handle 15-10

I run the MTZ's.  So far they are awesome.  I also have black steelies although mine are 15 x 8.  I paid $204 per tire and $60 per rim.  Good deals.  I went to National 4wd.  As far as wear the MTZ's are designed to be used on and off-road.  With more tread to asphalt surface you get less wear.

Baja Claws, or Boggers. And "cut them", Bias ply of course!
The boggers would do better with Chevrons siped into the big lugs, better lateral traction.

Cause both tires are brutal in the shallow snow and compacted snow. Deep stuff, fantastic!
Great mud, and good rock.

Muffintop has a brand new set of 5 KM2's on rims for a good deal right now.

I would grab those if I were you.

Toyo is my favorite, but the KM2 is a good quality tire as well and for the price, I would recommend this set up from Muffintop.

What size are ur tires? Thanks for the pics.

@Elsifer
1st pic: Those are some wicked tires but ill pass as to much for me lol
2nd pic: I was looking into those mickey thompsons

@Bnine
Ya I know about Muffintop tires for sale but there not the color of rims I like and I don't want to waste money on something thats not going to satisfy me lol If they were black, I would look more into them ;)

Km2 are nice, good quality and cheaper. I have a pair of Km2 31x10.5x15 on my Zr2 and thought I might try something different on my Jeep.

My tires  are 33x12.5 R15.  They are on 8in. rims so they will look narrower than if they were on 10in.  I will say that the MTZ's are supposed to hold up better than the CLAW's.  At least from the reviews that I have read, but they were also off-road reviews.

Take a look at the Goodyear Duratracs.  These are what I decided to put on the Rango after I was ready to pull the trigger on a set of BFG ATs.  I'm kinda likin' em.  I ran the truxus mt on my XJ & they were okay but for a daily driver the Duratracs are more civilized.

I like my Cooper Discoverer STT's.  They are pretty close in looks to the Toyo MT but maybe a bit lighter.  They are quiet on the highway and get me by off-road.

Any other comments or replys? Let me know!  8)

EDIT: Just curious, but no one said anything about the Dick Cepek Crushers? Are they not a great tire?

Maybe someone mentioned this already... but which of these tires lend themselves to performing the best while being aired down the least.

In other words... if a tire has a wicked stiff sidewall... it would probably have to be aired down even more to get it to become pliable. That in turn would result in a higher risk of popping beads if a guy wasn't running beadlocks.

Any thoughts?

Just some food for thought ...

Interco Swamper tires tend to be the best for good sidewalls and airing down. I find the Mickey Thompson MTZ (or any Cooper tire like Procomp, M/T, etc) like to run about 10-12 PSI and offer great traction there. I've never blown a bead on the MTZ even down to 8 PSI.

I've got KM2's.  They're quiet, and run on the street nicely.  Do well gripping rocks, and do decent in the mud if you spin them (I'm having major deja vu like I've written this before.....)  If you want a SUPER aggressive loud rough tire though, these aren't it - That would be a set of swampers.  Nitto's sound like a helicopter carrying spinning circular-saws going down the highway.....

Firestone destination MT's look really good I think Blaskin and lane has them for really cheap compared to other 33x12.50's I remember when i was shopping around not too long ago they were right on the top of my list for price reviews and performance etc etc I ended up going with the Km2 in the end.

@Tinkerer
I have also heard lots of good feedback about the Toyo M/T's Open. The only part that I do not like about about the Toyo's are, there like more towards an on road tire like u said which is not a bad thing, probably better but I want something meaner looking lol The Crusher's from Dick Cepek look sick.

@JOhnnyC
Haha ya I agree, but not going to happen right now :P

@sn4cktime
Km2 are nice tires and yes there are quiet on the road. My 31's are smooth and quiet. Those Nitto's do sounds crazy, too much for me lol

@Jrama
Nice tires and well im gonna have to say i'd rather go with Toyos or something different, not my style.

For some reason I really like the Dick Cepek Crushers, I think they look pretty bad a$$ and the reviews from google searches are coming up good. No one has said anything about them here? No one like? Bad problems?

I'm seriously considering MT Baja Claw Radials in 35"x12.50"x17" aired down w/ beadlocks... just thought I would share  ???

From my experience with 33" claws at 6 lbs they are definitely worth it.  Excellent traction in snow, mud and hills, poor traction on ice, smooth trail ride, noisey on the high way, have to be carefull in the rocks, weak side walls but they form good to ruts that your trying to climb out of or anything else, side biters work good for climbing out of ruts when you're hung up.  I've found that with other tires when I get in the mud I can't steer, just slide back and forth in ruts, with these aired down the jeep pulls in whatever direction you steer it.  Very good wear on the high way.  They are a good tire in my opinion, I didn't like them at 12 lbs before I had bead locks but at 6 lbs they are a totally different tire.

lilskaterpunk; If you're looking for a tough looking tire that growls and howls on the pavement, you're going to pay quite a bit, and they are going to wear quickly and probably unevenly. If you don't plan on wheeling your ride, you'll be far better off with a set MTs that are meant for mud and pavement. They won't wear out in a year and they'll still have a tough looking sidewall. I heard that Muffintop might consider separating his wheels and tires. They are about a $300 a corner tire new and have very few Km on them. If you're looking for black/machined DC-1 to go with them I can get you a price on those. Something to think about

@esi
Ya I agree with the wearing and tearing down fast. Don't want Muffintop tires, I already own a pair of Km2 and would like something different. Muffintop is asking a good price if anyone is looking for those type.

I think I will be going with the Toyo MT Open Season as there a ruff looking tire, many great comments on them, I read reviews, and life expectancy would be great if properly rotated, etc. Either the Toyo MT or Dick Cepek Crushers lol Im leaning more towards Toyos MT Open Season though :)
