Title: Bushman's XJ Build
Post by: bushman67 on April 25, 2010, 04:17:10 PM
What the heck! Guess I'll start a build thread. Who knows where it could lead.

Before: The budget buy end of march - 1996 XJ, green, saggy, 217,000km, body good shape, minor issues.

-- 3" skyjacker coils, RE disco's, RE 3.5" spring packs.
-- Actual lift 5" from "new" XJ specs... just over 6" gained due to saggy suspension.

First drive had nasty vibes, so I fab'd some 1.5" tcase drops. Avoided pulling the stud by bolting the square stock to the frame, then the cross member to the square stock with short bolt & nylock. Sorry no pic of that bit.

Some vibes fixed, but not enough, so added home made shims of 1/4" bar stock with noches cut out to lock them into place with the u-bolts. Worked pretty good... vibes were still present, but tolerable for now. But was running a dying D35... Pinion pooched, and limited slip issues. Swapped out for an 8.25, and a 1/2" shorter drive shaft.

Time to save for an SYE.

- Rubber rocker stripped gone, and rockers repainted with rocker guard and clear coat + pin stripe to break colors. Front bumper rock-guarded
- Rear end replaced yesterday, and Ecco wheels with used 235 desert duelers today... and mud courtesy of the bloody snow storm last night.

Just an update... still battling with a driveline vibration after doing the hack & tap a while ago, where I found that my tcase output shaft has a "wobble"

I got two different tcases and hopefully fix what ails me. Upon pulling my NP242J (from the 96) I found that the vacuum switches between mine and both the 99 & 97 NP242J tcase I have on hand are different... both in location & plug. Have no fear, it seems that you can just wrench out the sensor, and swap them, and reroute the wiring harness.

Also found that very minor play in my RE track bar led to a couple of death wobble experiences at 100km/h after hitting a seam in the pavement. YIKES.... rebuild kit installed :)

Now onto redoing axle ujoints...

Just some new pix after new shackles and spacers... plus some 'borrowed' 31" rubber (thanks fug!)

Nice! What a difference from the original shot.

Is that death wobble gone?

New bushing & hiem joint fixed all the play in the track bar, but I still had another death wobble experience after hitting a good overpass seam at 100km/h.

I know I have exsesive toe-in right now, and is obviously a contributor to the death wobble, however, after running without my discos for two days I think I found what starts it... I'm pretty sure my FR shock is toast.... this 'bounce' and the toe-in would get any front end slamming back & forth.  My alignment is tomorrow (Friday) anyway.... then I'll check into new front shocks.

rob that won't cause death wobble ;)

when you come by tomorrow we'll take a look and see what has play in it. i bet track bar......... its always the trackbar ;)

Track bar is tighter than tight... new bushing, bolt, heim joint, etc. No play that I can find. I was actually talking to Fenton's in Cochrane, and even with the track bar tight, he's seen impact induced death wobble.

my death woble was my ball joints, have you replaced them or inspected them yet?

I just had all steering components checked over when I had my alignment on Friday.. all checks out ok.. my toe-in problem could have easily started my death wobble when hitting potholes or bad overpass seam. I still have a suspect shock, and the stock steering stabilizer could very well be pooched.

Steering stabalizers don't cause DW, they just hide it for a while :)

found the knock..... odd that we could never locate the issue until it was quite pronounced, even though I had removed said problem a dozen times....

BRAKES, bolts slightly bent and slider bushings worn.

After recently blowing the motor in my Durango out at Maclean, I picked up a 90 XJ from a buddy. Can't stand driving something so low and want to be back wheeling something after the winter. Would you recommend buying a kit or piecing a setup together like you have done?
Thanks,

Guy

As the guy who helped put this together and install it.    If you need it done in a fairly reasonable time frame... buy a kit.   Only do used/pieced together if you have the time and patience.

Not to steal this thread, by any means, but on my Durango (obviously almost no aftermarket parts at all) I had to piece things together with chevy drop shackles and torsion twist and the 3'' bodylift. I just 5000k ago picked up a set of Dcepek 33x 12.5 and I love them. I'd like to run them on the cherokee, but it seems like so much lift needs to be acheived just to run 33's?? But I will say I am quite happy to be starting off with a SA to begin with. Excited for this change.
Thanks,

Guy
