What color was the 5.9?

Well I hope whoever stripped that 5.9 before I got there is someone on here..... :P

Anything left on it? Was busy this weekend but I'll grab the rear end if it's still there.

I'll probably see you there in the AM. Better be fast ;D

WTF, you already HAVE a D44a! I'm a working man, so there's no way I could get there this morning. :D

Was still there at 4pm on Sunday.

Thanks for the heads-up cLAY, the Trac-Lok D44a is now out of the 5.9 and awaiting installation under my ZJ! It was a heroic one- man wrenching effort but I got it out with 5 minutes to spare before the place closed. :D
Sadly, the driveshaft was missing, so I'm on the hunt for one that's the correct length. I hear the 5.9 D44a used a larger u-joint than the 5.2 so it may take a little work to find the right shaft and joint.

how much did you pay for it if you dont' mind me asking????
also, are you gonna truss that puppy before instal?

Nice find Trev, I sent you a PM on the other site if you see this post first.

Final bill with core charge ($15) and GST was $118.94. I do indeed plan to clean it up and truss it before it gets bolted in. Hopefully that'll happen before winter, haha!
BTW, you can look up PnP prices on their site, though front axles are listed under "axle" and rear axles are listed under "rear end" :D

Got your PM Fraser, shot you one back.

Sorry newby question...what do you mean by "trussing" the D44?

Sorry newby question...what do you mean by "trussing" the D44?
"Trussing" is when you weld a section of metal across the axle tubes to strengthen the unit via reducing tube flex under load. Here's a picture of an truss on the particular axle we were discussing.

Speaking of trusses, does anyone know what Jay generally charges for a truss job? I can get an MVC truss out of the States for $150 but I'd rather support a local guy if his prices are comparable.
-
better question is how are you gonna weld the aluminum centre section to the cast iron axle tubes?
not sure, but doesnt' the one in the U.S. bolt to the housing and then weld to the tubes?
just curious for when i FINALLY sell my dodge and get me a 5.9er ;)

The MVC truss/skid doesn't really attach to the pumpkin in any significant manner, aside from a metal loop around the pinion section to hold the front of the skid up. No, the truss basically just ties the tubes together to inhibit any flex that may be caused by the aluminum chunk. I think you're right that there does exist a truss that bolts to the center, but I haven't seen anyone using that particular model as I believe it was quite a bit more $$ than the MVC unit. There's a number of guys on Jeepforum running the MVC with no breakage issues, CLNinja in particular has one on his D44a with 4.56's and 35" tires and he's beat on the thing hard with zero problems.

show me a pic of the front and side and i can make you one in no time at work...

Pics of rear & front with the two extra triangle pieces added to the MVC design to improve the skid section. Shoot me a PM and we'll sort out the details!

Apeman continues to be an all-around awesome guy!

Are you also going to truss it on the bottom of the diff? Would be much better for ground clearance if you can work it out on top...

Yeah, bottom truss makes the most sense for a couple reasons, namely that 1) it's a truss/skid combination to protect the aluminum chunk and tying a bottom skid onto a top truss would be difficult if you can't weld to the chunk, and 2) the axle breather tube port is on the top of the passenger axle tube, so I'd have to figure out where to relocate that to, as well as fill in the hole.
So, yeah, a top truss would be ideal but the D44a makes that...challenging.

Right, good to know. GL with the build!
